Talks between union, hospital to resume
by By The Associated Press

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Contract talks between a regional hospital system and a union representing hundreds of striking workers in eastern Kentucky and West Virginia are scheduled to resume this week, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Appalachian Regional Healthcare was informed by a federal mediator that negotiations are set to begin again on Thursday, said Candace Elkins, spokeswoman for the hospital system.

Representatives of the United Steelworkers union have been putting together a counterproposal to submit to the hospital system.

"Hopefully both sides will be able to come to a fair agreement and get back to taking care of the communities we serve,'' said Roger McGinnis, the union president in Harlan, Ky.

Elkins said that ARH officials were ready to resume contract talks.

"We're committed to putting an end to the strike, which has been damaging to eastern Kentucky and southern West Virginia,'' she said.
