Any recommendations for accomodation in Edinburgh?
I'm taking my 14yr old daughter with me so backpacker hostels are out, so does anyone know of good places to stay that are central and not outrageously priced?

1. Why are backpacker hostels out?
Unless they have an age limit. My cousin & I (both adults) stayed at the Castle Rock Hostel. I was very impressed. It's right below Edinburgh Castle.

The folks working there were very friendly & helpful, & the rooms were clean.

If your daughter is a Harry Potter fan, you HAVE to go to the Elephant Cafe just off the Royal Mile where JK Rowling wrote the first book. I'm sure Edinburgh Castle was the inspiration for Hogwarts, as you get a fantastic view of it from the back dining room.

2. I thought they might have age limits...
I'll do some looking into it and find out. I hope that one doesn't have age limits coz it sounds and looks great...

3. I stayed at
the Dunedin Guest House, a short bus ride from downtown Edinburgh. It was very pleasant and not very expensive. It was one of the Rick Steves-recommended B & B's, if you happen to be a Rickster.

5. I've been looking at Rick Steves' website in preparation for
going to England this summer, and I like the political opinions he expresses, mostly about Americans not knowing what they're missing about some aspects of European life (longer vacations, public transit, health care) and about American arrogance and paranoia.

Of course, he gets hate mail for it, but also a lot of praise.
