Has anyone stayed at the Hyatt on Waikiki Beach, Oahu, HI?
And, how does it compare to the Hyatt on Maui? ...or the one on Kauai?

We are taking the kids next summer and wondering about the area in general. ie, safety issues, things to do etc.

Thanks!:hi:

1. Saw this a bit late, sorry
I have stayed at all three, Waikiki, Maui and Kaua'i

Kaua'i was too big, a real massive complex. I'd stay someplace else next time on Kaua'i.
I like the one on Maui very much, although the hotel beach left a lot to be desired. I
have also stayed at tthe Wailea Grand, which was far too gaudy for my taste.

The Hyatt on Waikiki was very nice, great beach across the street, and fabulous ocean
view if you get an ocean view room. The breakfast buffet is OK, although the breakfast
buffet at the Westin Hawai'i Prince hotel takes my prize for the best by far on the
island.

If you want a real treat, go to the Mauna Lani resort Hotel on the Kona side of the
Big Island. now THAT has the best of everything, unless you like city life. The action
is elsewhere, but we love it there more than any place else.

2. I haven't been to Hawaii for about 15 years, and I stayed on the UH

campus, but Waikiki in general was so tacky that it was good. I enjoyed seeing the interiors of the two venerable old hotels, the Moana and the Royal Hawaiian.

Two enjoyable activities that are within easy striking distance of Waikiki are hiking to the top of Diamond Head (you hike Inside what used to be the crater of the volcano and are rewarded with a splendid view, but bring drinking water, because the air is hot wherever the breezes are blocked) and snorkeling at Hanauma Bay. You can buy snorkeling kits in the convenience stores on Waikiki.

The sun can be vicious. Be sure to cover all exposed parts with sunscreen. I forgot the backs of my legs when we went snorkeling, and was I ever sorry!

If you haven't been to the Bishop Museum, go. It's got great collections on the natural history and anthropology of Hawaii and the Pacific, as well as a planetarium.

Hawaii is the only state where Caucasians are a minority group, and most of the people are at least partly of Asian descent. That makes for some excellent Asian restaurants, but you should also try the "plate lunch," which is the Island equivalent of diner food. My favorite was kalua pig, which is barbecued shredded pork with sort of teriyaki flavor.

Outside of Oahu, I've been to the Big Island and Kauai. Both have great diversity of climates and landscapes for such small areas.

3. I have not stayed there

but in my former work, I was a travel agent and viewed the property on a fam trip.

Hyatts are all pretty decent. They have their standards to uphold. The location on Waikiki beach is good. There are many other good hotels also. Why don't you go see a travel agent?

There is Sea Life Park outside of Honolulu, where you can swim with the dolphins. They have a wolphin- hybrid whale and dolphin to see. Cool place where you can touch many of the critters, dophins and stingrays, etc.

The International Market Place is a shoppers mecca. It is a big open air market where it is acceptable to bargain for a good price.

I have been to HI six times, and my last trip I spent two weeks there for a union convention. If I think of anything else, I will add it.
Have fun!
