I love to travel, but I always get scared beforehand.
For instance, once I'd committed to a trip to London. I would have backed out if I could've gotten my money back. Since I couldn't, I went on ahead, and loved it.

I'm not scared of anything specific, such as the plane being hijacked, being mugged, etc.

Anybody else ever have this problem?

3. Yes, all the time. I love to travel, but right before a big trip, I
always think I am going to die. I never worry about it on the way back, just on the trip there. I really don't know why that is - maybe it's because I don't deserve to do something I love.

7. Travel since 9-11 always makes me question my mortality
I am usually more nervous a couple of days before hand, and when we are taxi-ing on the runway. Then I am fine.

4. I'm always a basket case before a trip but the only way to get
to the fun is to just take control of the fear and go. Out first trip to Europe, I was a basket case. Worried about real dumb stuff like conversion of money(will I be ripped off?), eating strange food, understanding bus and metro schedules, communicating with the locals, just about everything. Well, after 7 trips, the only thing I worry about is will I get to the airport in plenty of time. Nothing is difficult except looking at the bill from the Credit Card companies when I get home.

5. I always get stressed as I leave....
However, it got much worse a few years ago when my house was burglarized while I was gone. I worry about my house burning down, my pets dying, being robbed, etc. I think the problem is a loss of control. When I am gone, I have no control over what happens to my home and it makes me very tense. But at least once I get where I am going, I generally have no problem putting it out of my head.

6. I'm shitscared right now...
I'm going to the UK and Europe via Bangkok in just over two weeks and I've already got that horrible tight Knot Of Fear in my tummy that won't go away. But I'm scared of something specific, which is flying. I'll be fine once I get there and I'm looking forward to being there, but the twentysomething hour flight to get there is the big hurdle.....

8. Update. I'm happy to tell you that since I posted this, I've made two trips.

I went to Mexico last winter and Canada a few months ago, and I've gotten over being scared to travel.

I believe a lot of it was that I was so unaccustomed to travelling. Now that I'm a little more accustomed to it, I feel better about it.

9. I do too
It's an unfortunate feeling. I've been seeing a doctor for it. I take some medication. Also, I've been trying to tell myself to relax, things are going to be all right... it's hard, but it helps.

10. For me,
there are a few concerns that bother me, but I can usually get over them. Most of them involve the actual plane.

My greatest fear is getting stuck in the middle seat in a group of 3. I usually choose an aisle seat now, though, but on a couple of trips, I've had to do the middle and it's very uncomfortable. I also despise sitting next to someone who is coughing, sneezing or otherwise engaged in an allergic reaction or has a cold. My immune system is weak, and you can bet I'll end up with whatever viral infection is rampant. It happened once on a trip to Toronto, and the second half of my trip was so miserable, I couldn't do anything I wanted to do.

On a flight to Britain, it was extremely uncomfortable trying to get any rest. I ended up being awake for about 40 hours instead, and I was glad we had a half day in London to recuperate before going full force the next day.
