With all the moronic discussion over Barack Obama's decision not to wear his religion on his sleeve (flag on his lapel), I couldn't help but notice that Chris Wallace, the host of Fox News Sunday, NEVER wears a flag lapel pin either.

1. Who *does* wear the damn things anyway?
Obviously bush, cheney, and the White House Thug Corps. I assume Hannity wears one. Who else? And do we know exactly when a colorful brooch made in China became a symbol of American patriotism?

This whole discussion is so inane and stupid I'm ashamed to have even commented on it, but now that I have, I might as well post.

2. Rove and Cheney tell wallace what to say.
No surprise Fox-Newspeak dutifully paints Obama as a subversive commie-pinko black terr'ist.

4. Karl Rove is coming on Wallace's show after a break.
Wonder if he'll have a pin. Sen. Schumer had one on just now as he advocated for Hillary. I forgot to check Sen. Durbin, an Obama man.

Why am I even worrying about this?

8. Good idea!
The TV has been pretty useless for news the last few days anyway because it has been nothing but Pope, Pope, Pope.

10. It was the Readers' Digest.
The magazine sent them out as a premium to their subscribers. I don't remember the exact date, but it was in the Nixon years, I think-- certainly during the Viet Nam War. The message was to wear the pins to show support for the continuation of the war, at a time when public opinion was turning toward peace.

Prior to this giveaway, it was a violation of flag etiquette to wear any representation of the flag as clothing or jewelry. It still offends me.

13. Interesting.

I was around then but had forgotten about this. Thanks for the info.

I could do without the flag-wearing as well, especially since it seems to have become some sort of right-wing identifier. It is interesting how conservatives wear flags everywhere and fly them by the dozen, but seem unconcerned with the reality of America, choosing instead to focus only on the symbol.

21. I believe you mean "Nash Bridges" -- he didn't wear a flag pin, either. . .
There was another detective show on at about that time, too -- "McCabe and Mrs Miller," with Rock Hudson in the title role.

Oh, my -- Vonnegut certainly had it right when he deplored our condition: "I'm an American," he lamented. "I don't have a culture . . . just a bunch of silly commercials running around in my head."

23. Boy, what a memory!
To be honest, I was just kidding - I thought "Nash McCabe" sounded like it would be a TV show. But then you come up with a "Nash" show and a "McCabe" show from that era. Incredible! You should be on Jeopardy.

3. Because the stupid base their decisions on this shit
and the right wing know this and exploit it to divert the stupid.

That dumb woman on the video is a victim of the right wing. There are too many in America just like her. They don't know the real issues because the talking heads don't talk about them. They are distracted with "Pledge Pin" bull shit.

7. Good sign..
I think the fact that all the right wing kook bags are trying to demonize Obama with, guilt by association, flag pins, and all that other crap, is a good sign. It shows that Obama scares the crap out of them, and they have NOTHING concrete to pin on him, so they just keep grasping at straws in their desperation. Notice how Clinton is getting a free ride. The right wing kooks want Cliton to be the monomer so bad they can taste it. Then they will stop the love fest they are having with her, and pummel her into dust. They have NOTHING on Obama, and I think, and hope, that most Americans are smart enough to see this.

18. Star Bellied Sneeches?
Edited on Sun Apr-20-08 06:54 PM by Mugsy
Doesn't this whole thing remind you of the old Dr. Seuss story about "Star-bellied Sneeches"?

For those unfamiliar, there were two types of "Sneeches", those that had stars on their bellies and those who didn't. Those that did believed themselves superior. Then, some shyster came to town with a contraption that could put stars on the Bellies of "ordinary" sneeches. Suddenly, everyone was the same. So then, the shyster showed them a "star-removing" contraption that "Star-bellied Sneeches" used to *remove* the stars to their bellies and then claimed that having "no stars" was superior. Soon everyone was adding and removing stars until no one could tell anyone else apart.

Obama is the King of the Free Ride. The reason many have
"nothing" on Obama is because many people have
absolutely no clue what he really stands for except for
"Change We Can Believe In".....

16. My flag pin story
I was working as a nurse at a large hospital in Atlanta-it was probably 2003. My head nurse came to me with my "Nurse's Week" gift- a flag pin. I had been off the day the were given out to the group so this was up close and personal. I looked at it very innocently and said, "What is this for?" "It's for Nurse's Week, she said." With the most confused look I could pose I asked her, "What does an American flag have to do with being a nurse?" She just stuttered, "Well, ah, ah...It's to show that you are a patriotic nurse." She really was an OK person but apparently no one questioned the motive before me.

For that matter, I guess my 20 years of military service are negated because I don't wear one either. Will the Patriot Police be coming to take back my Meritorious Service Medals?

Edit for spelling.

26. Insight into the life of Nash McCabe
http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/attytood/Nash_McCabe_The_rest_of_the_story.html

It also links to the McClatchy Newspaper article they refer to. This lady was recently laid off from her job as a clerk-typist and is currently unemployed. She's under huge financial burden because her husband has had a ton of surgeries, and is even scheduled for brain surgery the week of the PA primary. She has a life story that makes you want to cry. She complains that it took her 8 years to get disability pay for her husband after a work accident damaged his back. Yet her question wasn't about health care or jobs, it was about flag pins. I think Obama was right that when people lose faith in their government to improve their economic situation, they become concerned with other issues, even if they are dumb issues like wearing a flag pin.

28. In fairness to her, she was used (rather abused) by ABC
It was a hatchet job on "real Americans," as I've come to understand it.I've said all along to my friends and neighbors that "Flag Pins" is the new N-word. It's really just that simple. I ask the question repeatedly, on this board and wherever I may hear it, to challenge this new brand of "political correctness." Good article that really bears out my contention!

32. I thought elitist was the new n-word? Or is it really just any attack on Barack Obama. The new
brand of political correctness is deeming any attack or criticism of Mr. Obama has covertly racist. Some people have to realize that dumb negative attacks can be just that, and not necessarily racist. The race card has been played so many times since January that it's lost all meaning.

33. In this case, you have to read the article hokies4ever cites upthread
And the linked NYT article in it. The article noted people's need to cite inconsequentials rather than race. As for embedded codes for all of the -isms, there are healthy doses of it on all sides these days. Racism=lapel pin (fill in the blank). Sexism=shrill (voice too high? God, maybe?). Ageism=senior moment. The only one people aren't afraid to note is age. Most afraid? Race. Hence the codes. I noted the one above as it was the topic, but I could go on and on with this theme.
