As Americans continue to experience financial setbacks during these times of economic hardship, Ben Stein notes that pet animals are often overlooked and sometimes abandoned under harsh conditions.

1. Well, I know many people here will blast the piece because it's Ben Stein, but
he really nailed it on that one.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised by some people (not all in this situation) that had to buy a house bigger than they could afford would also not give second though to abandoning their pets when they became inconvenient.

Deplorable.

2. This is old news.
Why does it make it "new" just because some tool is saying it?

3. Really Challenges Some Entrenched Notions
I tend to think of Conservatives as cold-hearted. I don't necessarily mean cruel or malicious (in most cases). It's more I see them as thinking too much in stark, black and white terms to bother with compassion (or they some how convince themselves that it's kinder to let people fend for themselves, etc.)

Seeing Ben Stein, who we know is very conservative, take up for dogs and cats, well, it kind of puts that little prejudice to the test. Of course, it would have been nice if he told some of us how we could help, rather than waiting for the government to do something. The government can't even take care of its people, why should we expect help for animals? (I realize the irony in a Conservative asking the government to spend tax money on animals and a Liberal saying people need to do it).

Not completely off topic, there's a commerical for preventing animal abuse with Sarah McLachlan's "Arms of an Angel." It makes me cry. The practical side of me wonders why I cry for animals when children are being abused, neglected and abandoned too.

6. I've thought about that too.

Sometimes it feel like I care more about animals than people. I think it is because people (even children) have the ability to defend themselves and they have a voice that can tell the story. They can ask for help and report the abuse. Animals can't. They are mostly confused and don't understand their situation and can not comprehend humans' cruelty.

9. This is my most recent "Forclosure Rescue."
Found by the locksmith.

She gave birth on April 15th. Tax day. How appropriate is that?
