1. Is this a good cop - bad cop routine?
McCain acting with "outrage" playing the good cop, to keep "above the fray of dirty politics".

With the NC Repukes playing "bad cop" running the ad.

McCain's "outrage" also draws attention to the ad. People will go to You Tube to watch it and it doesn't cost McCain a penny.

Do I give McCain too much credit for savvy here? Or am I too cynical?

3. No, your 3rd point is right on the money. He looks good "condemning it" often,
but CNN, Fox "News", MSRNC and evening news run it (free) nonstop telling everyone what he is "condemning".

2. His "failure" to shut it down makes him look WEAK.
This could backfire with the base he's so desperate to hold.

11. only if we make that argument publicly
Democrats need to be all over cable TV saying that. Or else people won't pick that up.

4. Give him credit for immediately denouncing it.
But "it's not in keeping with the values of the party of Lincoln, T. Roosevelt and Reagan"? What about the party of Lee Atwater and McCain's own adviser Karl.

12. He gets a little bit of credit.
He'll get a lot of credit if it actually stops.

5. This is a test of McCain's leadership ability.
If he is really the leader of the Republican Party, the ad will not be shown. If he can't lead his own party, how can he lead the nation?

If that ad is run, it means that McCain is just a front. He is not really leading the Republican Party. That will show us that he is not qualified to be president. He is simply not presidential, not leader enough.

6. Actually, I think this ad is meant to benefit Hillary. IMcCain is rejecting it so she can hide.

10. The video is not racist
Nowhere does the video claim that blacks are an inferior race. The ad specifically attacks the fact that Obama associates with a person whose rhetoric is hateful.

8. I don't know about Teddy and Abe, but this is definitely in the Reagan tradition
And Reagan would always play the good cop knowing full well the mayhem being carried out on his behalf by Lee Atwater.

This is just another case of plausible deniability. I don't know if Republicans invented that term, but they sure have practiced it to a fine art.

13. The correct frame for this window...
John McSame cannot even control his own supporters.

How in the world does he expect to work with a Democratic Party Congressional majority?

14. NC GOP always goes for the redneck vote and $
But the dimwits are later this election than usual.
I sent this letter to the Raleigh News and Observer a few minutes ago. Linda Daves is the chair of the NC GOP. North Carolina DUers will know Chub Sewell (redneck with few peers, what a name) and Harold Covington (Nazis sometimes disguised as a Republican). Everyone knows who Jesse is.

---
The North Carolina Republican Party and Linda Daves are shameless. Both are too extreme for North Carolina and apparently too extreme for Senator McCain as well. I hope he is sincere and GD him if he isn't. I appreciate that the News and Observer printed the prelude to the excerpts from Reverend Wright's sermon that the GOP weasels used in their video. But that isn't the entire sermon and everyone should listen to the previous six minutes and then decide if you think Jeremiah Wright has a point.

And please explain how this manufactured controversy is relevant to the election of a governor for North Carolina? Chub Sewell, Jesse Helms and Harold Covington are proud of you Linda. I suppose the five GOP candidates for governor can be labeled extreme because John Hagee has endorsed McCain.

I am a fifty year old white male North Carolina native who has never lived anywhere else. And I have seen the American apartheid that Reverend Wright deplores. After listening to his sermon and Barack Obama's recent speech about it, my biggest problem with Senator Obama is that he puts too much distance between himself and the Reverend.

But Obama and Wright are correct about one thing. Governments can and do change. Sometimes they get worse and sometimes they get better. Our Federal government can only get better next January. Even after despicable campaign ads like this one.
