1. I don't put much stock in any concern about her mentioning hairstyles
But if she was trying to insult her audience, I think she may have succeeded.

11. I'm with you. Let's not read too much into her words.
She never knows what she is going to say next. Different day, different message, different strategy, different argument why the loser should be awarded the victory.

I was hanging with some brothers and sisters in Indy this weekend. At first they seemed a little reluctant to talk politics around me because they assumed I was with the white lady. Once they know I was supporting Obama, it all came out. The feelings against Clinton in the black community -- at least in my little sample of it -- are INTENSE.

This things that don't sound like code words to me, may sound that way to black folks. If so, I think that's unfortunate. I intensely despise Hillary and the kind of campaign she has run, but I don't think the Clintons are racists. I think there are a million reasons what people of color should not support Clinton, but racism is not one of them, IMHO.

35. Personally,
I don't like Obama's hairstyle. I think he'd look handsomer if his hair were a smidge longer. Since I'm voting on issues and character, rather than hairstyle, I'm voting Obama.

Hill's hair is fine. It's her character that makes me want to scream.

Besides, both candidates have problems. Men are heistant to vote for a woman and whites are hesistant to vote for a black candidate.

6. I'd really like to believe otherwise
I have thought about what she said a great deal but can find no other explanation for what she said other than it being a veiled reference to race. What other purpose could her words be meant for?

21. 90% of white males would say it is character that matters.
Not race or gender. Funny how we are always being told who we won't vote for, or why we need to settle for someone we don't want because prejudice requires it.

Perhaps its not 90%. Its everyone I know and everyone I grew up with, though studies may contradict.

30. I don't believe it
Seeing how white males in the south prefer the GOP by 30-40% margins, and have ever since the civil rights movement, I have my doubts that race plays no role.

Maybe outside the south race plays a minor role, I don't know. I know I see alot of whites in their 20s supporting Obama.

12. Peronally, I don't see the racial overtones, but
Bloomington is pretty much all white except for the university population.

The demographic difference between Gary and Bloomington is huge.

Were you being sarcastic?

with the hairstyle comment. It might make more sense with a bit more context from the moments before that. I assume she was trying to argue that Obama is a passing fad, like a hairstyle. People who are more serious and thoughtful would naturally support her, and when she loses, it will not be because of her positions on issues, her choice of campaign tactics, her attitude, or the various baggage she and her husband brought to this campaign cycle from the past. No, it will be because we didn't give it any more thought than we give a hair style.

If that was what she was thinking, it is undoubtedly one of those statements that she should regret. We all say things that we regret. In her case, there is a camera running.

But this kind of statement, whether well planned or just a slip in a moment of frustration, belies the Clinton attitude of entitlement that so many of us find repugnant.

Obama was not my first choice. Edwards was. But I have taken a great deal of time to learn about Obama. If I had known this much about him 9 months ago, he would have been my first choice. It really in insulting to me to have her compare this to a choice of hair styles.

And maybe that is where the racial angle comes in. It is easy to assume that a black person supports Obama because he is black. But if I was able to learn about the man and come to support him despite our pigmentation differences, then maybe, just maybe it is possible for a black person to support Obama for reasons other than color. So I can see how it could be a "racial comment" from that angle. That is, this comment seems to completely discard the possibility that a black person could do an objective examination of both candidates and decide to support Obama for objective reasons.

I still don't believe it was intended as a racially-coded comment.

On the other hand, the SAME experts have shown that Obama can't possibly become more wonderful, brilliant or ethereal.

In fact its well known that he actually walks 1/16" of an inch off the ground. Its true (!!)

23. Who is she talking to there? Retarded persons? Aliens from mars?
The condescension is off the charts, but racism has to be read into her remarks, it is so well camouflaged.

What strikes me the most is how complacently her target audience puts up with this much matronizing schoolmarm cajolery.

I am one of Hillary's most enthusiastic admirers here on DU.

But her comment in this clip has to be the dumbest thing she has said so far in this campaign.

I won't try to defend it or explain it.
