He's my former governor and he often used to "hang out" at our campus because the President of the college is a personal friend. But I don't think he's been in VT much...so if he's lost weight and toned up while being on the road -- all the more impressive!

Why does everyone oppose voter ID being required to vote? Since there is no constitutional right to vote in federal elections I don't understand why everyone is opposed to the requirement of someone simply being required to show a simple FREE ID.

It must be government issued. Some elderly and shut ins don't drive, thus no driver's license.

I don't know how hard IN pushed the issue and told people what to do...but it is most definitely a way to keep the disabled, the poor, and low income from voting.

An example. I had to renew my driver's licence recently. The only instructions on the teeny card that came gave a website. Then it said if you don't have internet access...call this number.

The website was confusing even to someone good on computers like me. Setting up an appt was a pain in the neck.

So I called the number. They gave me the run around, even though they did answer promptly. First question, do you have internet access.

To older people and disabled, things like this are very hard to do. We have helped neighbors who get confused over such things, though they seem simple.

On the other hand, in your own state you have the example of Saxby Shameless and his outright theft of a seat away from Max Cleland. Are you aware of the "rob-georgia" file? If not, Google it for some interesting reading.

For the most part, "voter fraud" is a distraction from the real problem, which is election fraud (crooked voting machines, felons lists, etc.), which is almost exclusively a Republican endeavor.

There are massive problems with election fraud and voter suppression (to the tune of MILLIONS of voters being disenfranchised). There are virtually NO genuine cases of "voter fraud" (i.e. fraud committed by voters) but there are hundreds of thousands of cases of GOP operatives like you, fraudulently blocking voters because, for example, they weren't home the day that a registered letter sent in a caging operation arrived.

But what 'proof of identity' is necessary to get the 'free' ID? Certified Birth Certificate? Costs $15.00 to get one of those (has to be ordered by the person who's certificate is being requested at the County Courthouse).

What else is necessary to get the 'free' ID card?

because the new Indiana law requires the IDs. It disenfranchises those who don't drive. You have to pay for the ID, so it is a poll tax. Is it any wonder why Republicans support the ID requirement and Democrats do not? It mostly disenfranchises Democrats. We usually have strong support from the urban and elderly and minorities and poor.

And lastly, where is all this supposed voter fraud? Howard Dean affirmed yesterday that there is not one case in Indiana in recorded history of someone being charged with fraud for voting when they should not.

It's a sham issue trumped up by Pukes to get uninformed voters to go along with their voter suppression tactics. And you fell for it.

Unless someone comes to their door and provides them with a "free" Voter ID, it's not free to them.

No car? No public transportation that you can use? You can't go to where the voter ID's are provided.

Need paperwork to prove you're disabled, elderly or poor? How do you get that since you can't get to anywhere it's provided.

And, why should it expire every six years? Or over? Once you register to vote, if you keep voting regularly, it should stay in effect.

I'd be with you if there was any evidence the voter fraud occurs regularly. The only example I've ever heard of was Ann Coulter.

In the meantime, there's plenty of evidence that this would be a major inconvenience for poor and older people. The rightwingers are doing this deliberately to eliminate Democractic voters. It's vote suppression, just as Dr. Dean told that interviewer.

As a fellow Georgian, I am surprised that you do not know this. I live in Athens-Clarke County and there is no drivers license office here. There USED TO BE one in the in town Kroger store BEFORE Perdue and the Rethuglicans came into office.

Republican voter fraud/supression has been a MAJOR interest to him
for years now. They got away with it 3 times: 2000, 2002 and 2004.
Since Howard has been DNC chair, it has been like an antibiotic
suddenly introduced to fight Republican infection. The MSM doesn't
want to hear about it. They just want to be first with numbers and
projections, and it's a lot easier when, as Republican Rep. Peter King
said on election day 2004, "we'll take care of the counting." Never again!

The poor anchor wanted to cut him off, but Howard knows that game, and
gets his point across even when they don't want him to, and they NEVER
want him to--which is why I do!

The repugs or rw made sure we got a non-veto proof Congress.

There weren't enough races in play in 2006. We won most of those that were.
This time, we have a chance at a lot more of them without giving up any of
the ground we gained in 2006. It would still be a miracle if we got a veto-proof
Senate this time, or even a filibuster-proof Senate, but even a 55-45 majority
would be a powerful base for a Democratic President to work with, and that is a
goal that we can call realistic this time. That is one of the reasons I can't
agree with those who say "if it isn't Hillary/Obama (take yer pick), I'm not voting
Democratic this time."

If not this time, then when?

Those big bad Diebold type machines are still in place. We need Dean to organize strategies to monitor areas where those machines are deployed. Let's not have another Ohio, '04. Bush's FEC is a non-functioning agency.

Dean started it, and Bill Clinton continued it with his outburst at Chris Wallace,
but when the other Democrats saw that not only was Howard Dean not struck by lightning,
but neither was Bill Clinton, they suddenly figured out that they could speak their
mind in public, and right back at the very media that is paid to shut them up, and they
can still live to tell the tale. But Howard was THE first to start to do that. Only
because of him did the others figure out that mincing your words and being polite just
didn't have the same impact on progressives that National Hate Radio does on the radical
right. Speaking up forcefully and truthfully does NOT get you hit by lightning, after
all. It took Howard Dean to show that, but at least he was around to do it. Otherwise,
we might still be pulling out our hair at polite Democrats getting slaughtered at the polls
because they were somehow convinced it would be wrong to be anything but timid on TV.

Howard deserves the thanks of the whole party for having the guts to show us that there
is, too, life in politics after speaking your mind. The only thing that still makes me
want to scream is that it took so long for others in the party to follow his lead.

My impression was that the anchor seemed totally interested in what Dean was saying; it was the voice in the anchor's earpiece that wanted him to rein in Dr. Dean.
