they kinda forced him into it since that was the only route he had to try to make change in the party since people LIKE CLINTON made such a big deal about his scream...

you gotta remember, when dean ran in 2004 he was the anti-dlc anti-establishment democrat...

or as he called it

the democratic wing of the democratic party

maybe he's so fired up he's burning calories like crazy?!

He's my former governor and he often used to "hang out" at our campus because the President of the college is a personal friend. But I don't think he's been in VT much...so if he's lost weight and toned up while being on the road -- all the more impressive!

Go Howard!

15. Full interview on CNN
http://www.cnn.com/video/?/video/politics/2008/05/06/intv.dean.voters.speak.cnn

And here is the link to a partial transcript.

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/05/06/dnc-chair-on-resolving-florida-michigan-stalemate/

"(CNN) – Howard Dean, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, set forth three principles that he thinks should govern any effort to reach a compromise regarding seating the Michigan and Florida delegations to his party’s nominating convention.

First, “we want to respect the voters who went to the polls,” Dean said. “It was politicians that made a mess of this — not the voters,” he told CNN’s Don Lemon Tuesday.
“Secondly, you have got to respect these two candidates,” Dean said of Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. “You cannot change the rules at the end of the game and change the outcome.”

“Thirdly, you’ve got to respect the 48 states that followed the rules they way they were supposed to,” the former presidential candidate said.

“So there will be some sort of compromise in the Rules Committee on the 31 of May, I hope,” the DNC chair said. “But we don’t know what that compromise is going to look like right now.”

Why does everyone oppose voter ID being required to vote? Since there is no constitutional right to vote in federal elections I don't understand why everyone is opposed to the requirement of someone simply being required to show a simple FREE ID.

25. Not free, not that simple.
It must be government issued. Some elderly and shut ins don't drive, thus no driver's license.

I don't know how hard IN pushed the issue and told people what to do...but it is most definitely a way to keep the disabled, the poor, and low income from voting.

An example. I had to renew my driver's licence recently. The only instructions on the teeny card that came gave a website. Then it said if you don't have internet access...call this number.

The website was confusing even to someone good on computers like me. Setting up an appt was a pain in the neck.

So I called the number. They gave me the run around, even though they did answer promptly. First question, do you have internet access.

To older people and disabled, things like this are very hard to do. We have helped neighbors who get confused over such things, though they seem simple.

26. If my 83 year old aunt, who hasn't renewed her driver's license in
15 years, decided to vote on the spur of the moment, she
would be turned away.

She as always been able to have someone drive her to the
polls when she felt a stirring in her civic duty centers...

she would be screwed in this election.

Her signature should be enough.

It is enough for a contract to be entered into.

Driver's license is over-kill.

If a person's driver's license is not renewed for age or vision or hearing...then they have to know how to get more ID.

32. Because it's designed to prevent Democrats from voting.
The people who have trouble getting picture ID are disproportionately Democratic.

Since there's no evidence that fraudulent voting is a problem, it's clear the motivation is to suppress these voters.

40. Voter ID
In Georgia, which also passed a photo ID law, there were
numerous instances where "Uncle Joe" and "Aunt
Sue" voted for years after their death. I guess it would
be difficult for them to get photo IDs. Georgia offers the IDs
free of charge. If you know someone who needs an ID and
doesn't have transportation, drive them.

44. First, my bet is that you can't actually come up with any examples
of the Graveyard Vote--it's a myth. If you can, you can't find 10 of them.

On the other hand, in your own state you have the example of Saxby Shameless and his outright theft of a seat away from Max Cleland. Are you aware of the "rob-georgia" file? If not, Google it for some interesting reading.

For the most part, "voter fraud" is a distraction from the real problem, which is election fraud (crooked voting machines, felons lists, etc.), which is almost exclusively a Republican endeavor.

48. The numbers simply don't justify the approach
There are massive problems with election fraud and voter suppression (to the tune of MILLIONS of voters being disenfranchised). There are virtually NO genuine cases of "voter fraud" (i.e. fraud committed by voters) but there are hundreds of thousands of cases of GOP operatives like you, fraudulently blocking voters because, for example, they weren't home the day that a registered letter sent in a caging operation arrived.

59. IDs are free of charge?
But what 'proof of identity' is necessary to get the 'free' ID? Certified Birth Certificate? Costs $15.00 to get one of those (has to be ordered by the person who's certificate is being requested at the County Courthouse).

What else is necessary to get the 'free' ID card?

How does the person get to the site to procure their 'free' ID card?

37. nuns got turned away by their own sister who knew them
because the new Indiana law requires the IDs. It disenfranchises those who don't drive. You have to pay for the ID, so it is a poll tax. Is it any wonder why Republicans support the ID requirement and Democrats do not? It mostly disenfranchises Democrats. We usually have strong support from the urban and elderly and minorities and poor.

41. You know, it's people like you that some of our founding fathers were talking about
when they protested passing the bill of rights because they feared some idiot would come along and assume those are the only rights we have.

Secondly, in what state of denial do you live in where ID is free?

And lastly, where is all this supposed voter fraud? Howard Dean affirmed yesterday that there is not one case in Indiana in recorded history of someone being charged with fraud for voting when they should not.

It's a sham issue trumped up by Pukes to get uninformed voters to go along with their voter suppression tactics. And you fell for it.

42. Those who don't have an ID are usually elderly, poor, or disabled.
Unless someone comes to their door and provides them with a "free" Voter ID, it's not free to them.

No car? No public transportation that you can use? You can't go to where the voter ID's are provided.

Need paperwork to prove you're disabled, elderly or poor? How do you get that since you can't get to anywhere it's provided.

And, why should it expire every six years? Or over? Once you register to vote, if you keep voting regularly, it should stay in effect.

52. Why do you feel the need to correct a problem that doesn't exist?
I'd be with you if there was any evidence the voter fraud occurs regularly. The only example I've ever heard of was Ann Coulter.

In the meantime, there's plenty of evidence that this would be a major inconvenience for poor and older people. The rightwingers are doing this deliberately to eliminate Democractic voters. It's vote suppression, just as Dr. Dean told that interviewer.

53. Hmmm, did you hear the part...
...where Dr. Dean mentioned that never, not once in the history of Indiana elections has there ever been a prosecution for voter fraud.

Yet they still passed one of the most restrictive voter ID laws in the nation, to combat a nonexistent problem.

Now, given that all legislative bodies have limited time and resources, why oh why do you think they spent their time on this particular law???

The question answers itself.

29. Howard was on firm familiar territory here
Republican voter fraud/supression has been a MAJOR interest to him
for years now. They got away with it 3 times: 2000, 2002 and 2004.
Since Howard has been DNC chair, it has been like an antibiotic
suddenly introduced to fight Republican infection. The MSM doesn't
want to hear about it. They just want to be first with numbers and
projections, and it's a lot easier when, as Republican Rep. Peter King
said on election day 2004, "we'll take care of the counting." Never again!

The poor anchor wanted to cut him off, but Howard knows that game, and
gets his point across even when they don't want him to, and they NEVER
want him to--which is why I do!

34. I didn't think we could have gotten that anyway
There weren't enough races in play in 2006. We won most of those that were.
This time, we have a chance at a lot more of them without giving up any of
the ground we gained in 2006. It would still be a miracle if we got a veto-proof
Senate this time, or even a filibuster-proof Senate, but even a 55-45 majority
would be a powerful base for a Democratic President to work with, and that is a
goal that we can call realistic this time. That is one of the reasons I can't
agree with those who say "if it isn't Hillary/Obama (take yer pick), I'm not voting
Democratic this time."

If not this time, then when?

73. But now, ALL the major Democrats are having none of it
Edited on Wed May-07-08 04:08 PM by DFW
Dean started it, and Bill Clinton continued it with his outburst at Chris Wallace,
but when the other Democrats saw that not only was Howard Dean not struck by lightning,
but neither was Bill Clinton, they suddenly figured out that they could speak their
mind in public, and right back at the very media that is paid to shut them up, and they
can still live to tell the tale. But Howard was THE first to start to do that. Only
because of him did the others figure out that mincing your words and being polite just
didn't have the same impact on progressives that National Hate Radio does on the radical
right. Speaking up forcefully and truthfully does NOT get you hit by lightning, after
all. It took Howard Dean to show that, but at least he was around to do it. Otherwise,
we might still be pulling out our hair at polite Democrats getting slaughtered at the polls
because they were somehow convinced it would be wrong to be anything but timid on TV.

Howard deserves the thanks of the whole party for having the guts to show us that there
is, too, life in politics after speaking your mind. The only thing that still makes me
want to scream is that it took so long for others in the party to follow his lead.

31. Anchor Squirms At Suppression -- But Shuts It Down At "Torture"
Dr. Dean may yet cure DC-Impeachophobic Syndrome (intentionally or otherwise).

36. That is awesome
Dean was in complete control and despite it being on MSM the truth literally poured out of his mouth-seemingly unedited. I loved it.:toast:

64. The anchor didn't squirm; he's the one who openly said "voter suppression".
My impression was that the anchor seemed totally interested in what Dean was saying; it was the voice in the anchor's earpiece that wanted him to rein in Dr. Dean.

Too bad that Dr. Dean had to agree not to run for the '08 presidency in order to get the DNC job. He speaks for all of us.

The giggling airheads on cable news are intolerable by any standard. They get worse every year.

Thank you Dean.
