A polar bear that swam more than 200 miles in near-freezing waters to reach Iceland was shot on arrival.

The bear, thought to be the first to reach the country in at least 15 years, was killed after local police claimed it was a danger to humans, triggering an outcry from animal lovers. Police claimed it was not possible to sedate the bear.

Iceland's environment minister, Thorunn Sveinbjarnardottir, gave the green light for police to shoot the bear because the correct tranquiliser would have taken 24 hours to be flown in, the Icelandic news channel Visir.is reported.

Sveinbjarnardottir's account was disputed by the chief vet in the town of Blönduó, Egill Steingrímsson, who said he had the drugs necessary to immobilise the bear in the boot of his car. "If the narcotics gun would have been sent by plane, it would have arrived within an hour," he said. "They could keep tabs on the bear for that long."

(How gruesome these people are. And they live so close to the wild, yet they are heartless, and have no appreciation for other life).

4. We are doing the same in Alaska and other regions.
So many people have this mentality it makes me sick.

"Kill the bear, there is a minuscule possibly in the most improbable of circumstances that it could be dangerous, and making sure people's irrational fears are taken care of is always more important"

"We need to save money on gas, that's more important than some stupid caribou, drill drill drill!!!"

I really could go on a murder rampage against these people. :grr:

2. That is tragic
In a few years, they may be regretting it when polar bears are near extinction.

3. Tragic
I can't even bring myself to watch it. I wouldn't normally wish anyone harm but I hope something truly awful happens to the fucking animal who shot that poor bear.

5. It is tragic. But if there was a half-starved polar bear in my neighborhood...?
I might not be that upset if someone shot it.

Sorry.

Yeah, they're cute as can be.

I love polar bears.

I love my family more.

They are one of the few predators that will prey on humans if given the chance.

7. It could have been handled
They just did not care. Period. The bear swam 200 miles in order to live and that was his end.

Anyway, hopefully if this happens again, Iceland will not be so quick to kill, if people are outraged at their actions.
