First of all, there is not that much real physical difference between border states and Mexico. They have mostly the same geological and geographical composition. It's mainly just a line in the sand. The conditions change as you look south but it's mostly still a region that has the same economic and natural resources as the US. Their problem is and has been political. Through whatever means they have failed their people. Corruption is a fundamental reality in Central America. Poverty is their reality and they are doing what any human being would do in a similar situation. I have no disdain for a person that does whatever they deem necessary for mere survival. People follow the money. It makes sense. We (apparently) have a need for cheap labor. That employment drives their migration north. The jobs available to them here pay low wages. That means we attract poorly educated immigrants. What people here do not like to see is poorly educated poor people all over their neighborhoods. It offends our sense of community and balance. These newcomers form their own communities, overwhelm our cities by their numbers and the native citizens object to their presence. More and more Spanish TV and radio stations begin to appear to accomodate this community. More Spanish billboards are erected. Entire regions of the US become totally dominated by a foreign culture in every way. What nation of people wouldn't object to this? It feels like an invasion. It is like a group of people you don't know have crashed your party. They are behaving themselves, and are quietly drinking your punch and cookies, remaining on the fringe and out of the spotlight, but they weren't invited. It's uncomfortable and troubling, because you don't know them.
Questions arise such as, "Why should I pay for their kids' education?" "Why should our hospitals close because of indigent care?" "Why can't I get my car paid for after an illegal alien smashes into me with no insurance?" "Why should I have to subsidize their pregnancy?" These are totaly legitimate questions. I often hear the argument made that, "I just want a better life for my children." Well, so does everyone else! If you couldn't afford to provide that better life, then why did you choose to have children to start with? Could you not control yourself? Could you not choose to abstain from unprotected intercourse? I have no children because I can not afford to pay for them on my income. I make $18 an hour. If you are desperately poor what business do you have procreating? It's seems to me that is a selfish and thoughtless act that makes you not a victim, but a perpetrator of the problem. OK, so you made a mistake, now what? Bring that burden to bear on others? Make the selfish decision to have us all pay for your irresponsibility? No contraception because of your religious faith? I shouldn't have to pay for that. My tax dollars should pay for things that benefit society at large, not pay for someone to take advantage of the good will of America.
Everyone wants a better life. Illegal immigration makes that harder for US citizens and other immigrants from abroad more difficult. Not everyone has the ability to just walk over the border and squat here. Other countries have people just as needy and just as industrious as those from Central America. It's not an issue of race at all. It's an issue of fairness and equality. That's the American way. Jumping in line ahead of others is the republican way.
Ok, so since we aren't going to round them all up and deport the undocumented workers because is too expensive, invasive, and well, plain evil, what do we do? The republicans want them here. They are our cheap labor force. They are union busting scabs that keep wages down. The Democrats figure that since we're not going to get rid of them by enforcing the existing laws, we might as well make them citizens and let them vote. That makes sense. They are here and they aren't going anywhere. They deserve to have some representation. If we aren't going to enforce the laws then I agree. The republicans want "a guest worker program". That fits their needs pretty neatly: Cheap labor that can't vote. See how that serves their interests? It's just lovely.
I am sure some of you out there are gonna attack something I said but I said everything here with best intentions and without any intent of either racism and classism. It's based on what people feel and what appears to be happening in the real world.
