1. I see Cenk's point but I really think Obama probably listens to most of that stuff!
I am with Ben on this one.

2. I agree with Ben
My tastes are similar to Obama's, except I would have Brubeck rather than Coltrane or Davis. Oh, and there'd be a strong British Rock presence too...The Who, most notably.

But then I have a few years on Obama.

Dumbest thing Cenk has said in his entire life.

5. I dont want to know people who dont listen to Coltrane.
That is indeed an absurd statement.

Its like saying no one listens to Elvis, or no one reads Hemingway.

7. Many people don't listen to Coltrane. It's the "nobody listens" comment that's ignorant.

8. Come on Jgraz, you should by now that Cenk loves hyperbole. It's part of what I like about him...
Yeah, sometimes he goes too far (and he knows it), but it's all in good fun...and it's entertaining.

Besides which, if he always played it safe he'd be boring.

11. I should have said that I cant relate to people who dont listen to Coltrane.
Edited on Fri Jun-27-08 03:15 PM by Dr Fate
....In any event, I'm sure our musical tastes must cross-over somewhere...but I would never be able to fathom why anyone who listens to music would not like John Coltrane.

To me, it's like saying you dont like bread or water.

13. Could be- but if they scratch the surface of music at all, they dig Coltrane, regardless of age.
Edited on Fri Jun-27-08 03:28 PM by Dr Fate
I was listening to the more popular classic Jazz when I was in my 20s in the 1990s- and anyone I knew who liked good music either liked most of the old jazz guys, or were open to it.

It's all opinion at this point, but if someone has HEARD Coltrane, and doesnt like it, then I wouldnt know why.

I guess I'm thinking about people who really get into music. I often forget that people who like what ever is popular or only new stuff, or just listen music as background noise dont really seek out the best stuff....Its a given that people who are not hard-core music buffs or folks interested in lots of different sounds wouldnt even attempt to get into stuff like that Coltrane...

Anyway, I think Obama really likes Coltrane, and it doesnt suprise me a bit.

15. I've gotta be honest, I'm not a big jazz person. I know my favorite author (see avatar) loved it...
but not me.

Look, I don't hate it or anything, although I will say that I MUCH Prefer piano to horns...I just never got into horns. So something slow with piano and percussion, great. But for me, leave the horns at home.

24. Listening suggestion: Giant Steps by Tommy Flanagan
Edited on Fri Jun-27-08 05:36 PM by jgraz
Tommy was Trane's piano player and this album is his own take on Coltrane's most famous album. All of the familiar Coltrane compositions are there, but played on piano instead of sax.

One interesting note: when they first recorded the original Giant Steps, the title track was so hard that Tommy famously flubbed his piano solo. He was a bit pissed at Coltrane because, at the time, they lived in the same apartment building. Tommy thought Trane could have at least walked down one flight of stairs and shown him the music prior to the recording session.

As you might expect, Tommy's completely redeems himself with his new solo on this version of the album -- but even without knowing the story, it's one of the best jazz piano recordings you can get.

25. Interesting. Piano irritates me. I like winds much better. Saxaphone best of all, but
I do not seek out Coltrane. I don't like (unable to appreciate?) the wall of sound. I like minimalist music.

10. Sorry Cenk
I am only 40 and I listen to most of that music. It is not unusual for an intellectual to have an eclectic taste in music and musical artists across the genres.

14. That was weird, why's it hard to believe he likes that music?
Those are all very well known and celebrated artists. What black man over 40 doesn't listen to Miles davis and John Coltrane? I'm a black guy in my 20s and Coltrane is my frickin avatar.

And how are Ludacris and Jay-z the safe hip-hop choices? Will Smith is the safe hip-hop choice.

Cenk was way off on this one.

16. We are so used to people like Bush being fake & contrived about this stuff...
...that the natural insticnt is to assume everyone is. Its not always the case and I agree with you.

I'm being told in the subthread above that people under 30 dont get into the good jazz, and that was not my experience when I was in my 20s either.

18. Look on Itunes and listen to the popular music stations. I think it's damn near fact
most people under 30 simply aren't listening to jazz on those Ipods.

I don't say that with any judgment whatsoever, just matter of factly. Are there exceptions that prove the rule? Of course.

And if *you* happened to have listened to it in your 20's, you likely had other friends with similar interests and tastes in some ways (part of why they were your friends).

Of course this is a real non-issue for me either way. :)

21. You are right as far as the casual music listener goes.
But anyone who is interested in scratching the surface or finding out who influenced music- they get into stuff like Coltrane. I know plenty of young people who's CD & record collection would not correspond with what's popular on I-tunes....Especially if they play music...

17. I think Cenk's point is that Obama had the perfect, easily digestible list of hip music
that covered all of the necessary bases.

I lean toward Ben on this but don't completely dismiss Cenk's point, even though I don't think he's really right on this one.

As for "safe choices", I believe he's trying to say those are top, popular artists people are familiar with. Not that they're "safe" in the sense that they have non controversial, clean lyrics, etc.

19. Coltrane used Heroin. I'm not sure how "safe" that is, if we want to nit-pic.
If he wanted iron-clad, safe pics, he would have picked Kenny G or something that sucked.

At this point we are nit-picking over non issues, but I still find it all interesting.

Coltrane and the scene he came from isnt all that mainstream or accessible to many folks , as this thread illustrates.

20. Well, the right is using weak guilt by association attacks but even they won't go THAT far
Obama's picks have a good mix of "safe" and hip and edgy. That was Cenk's point, that it was the perfect mix. In a way it's a compliment, saying that Obama has taste that's too good to be true.

But again, I side with Ben on this one more than Cenk.

PS---Here's a real issue, a great resource to combat the Obama Smear Emails (no, this isn't about Obama's website): http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=6410712&mesg_id=6410712

That music list is just too diverse. Most of my friends listen to the same types of music that they did in college...or slightly beyond.

has blind faith, kurt franklin, talib kweli, mary mary, the game, l'il wayne, the allman brothers, casting crowns, the stones, common, nas, nore veggie tales and much more. that is not all of the music i like. i taught my kid to have an open mind about music and we introduce each other to different music now. he could have all of that and then some. i wonder what cenk has on his ipod?

28. I agree with Ben.
I'm a 44 year-old white woman who has Doris Day, Dean Martin, Ben E. King, Bob Dylan, Albert Collins, Stevie Wonder, ABBA, Bon Jovi, The Flobots, Will.i.am, Allison Krause and Lisa Ono among my eclectic iPod mix. Just because Cenk's musical taste obviously only runs with one, maybe two, genres and generations, that doesn't mean the majority of people with iPods have such limited musical tastes. And for him to think jazz and blues are weird musical tastes from a person who has spent a good chunk of time in Chicago further illustrates how truly off-base he is on this.

29. If You Listen to an iPod for Any Period of Time,
you are going to have dozens and dozens of artists on there.

It does sound like a carefully arranged list, but I doubt they made it up from whole cloth. I suspect politics was responsible for picking out the most appealing list of artists. If Obama has the Bee Gees or Milli Vanilli on there, you and I will never hear about it.
