Listening to him speak, I'm reminded of one of my hero's, Senator Paul Wellstone.

6. You Da Man, Anthony Weiner!
I think we've got our 2008 keynote speaker!

And I hereby move that the OFFICIAL DU term for the MINORITY party be "The Republic Party".

All those in favor?

8. I have a problem with this guy
I don't think Carter can be compared to Ann Coulter, as Weiner wrote:

"People write crazy things all the time. When Ann Coulter attacks the widows of 9/11 victims or a moviemaker fantasizes about assassinating President Bush, we are tempted to simply lament the bottom feeders and continue on our way."

Nor do I think Jimmy Carter is anti-semitic:

"But Jimmy Carter is more than guilty of overstatement and being plain wrong. He is guilty of anti-Semitism."

I haven't read Carter's book. But I saw a segment on Democracy Now today that had two secular Jews from England wondering why in Israel, there is a hearty debate about the Palestinian/Israel issue, yet in England and the United States Jews line up behind each other like sheep to accuse anyone who believes that Palestinians have a right to exist as anti-semitic.

The article I quoted from:

http://www.jewishpress.com/page.do/20544/Jimmy_Carter_-_Polemist-In-Chief.html

10. As I said in my post...
I don't know him, but if he is Jewish, which, I believe he probably is, he is more able to judge anti-Semitism than I am. I do not believe Jimmy Carter in any way meant to SOUND LIKE ONE, I'm from Georgia, after all, I adore Carter. I agree with the premise of your link BUT I AM NOT JEWISH, so, I have no opinion in this matter that will make me NOT SOUND LIKE ONE. A slippery slope, my friend. I don't care if you have a "problem with this guy", I like what he is saying IN THIS CLIP. Leave it at that, please. Can't we just have a nice "hurrah" moment?

And yes, we can have a "hurrah" moment. I don't care if you don't care if I have a problem with the guy. He is a politician who represents the public. I think people should know how he stands on the issues. And I am not your friend, just a fellow Democrat.

So be it. I'm just curious, were you this critical of the Iraq War? Do you criticize others as harshly as an amiable EX- pres? Who, btw, I think, meant nothing harsh in his assessment of a complicated affair between sovereign counties who can fend for themselves. Or can they?

12. Well, well, well, there's a classic misstatement. Dare I say, a LIE?
I'm pretty sure it's the Palestinians and their good buddies (they have some, right?) who don't believe ISRAEL has the right to exist. Now, suddenly, it's Israelis denying that Palestinians have the right to exist?

That would make the sentiment pretty even on both sides, wouldn't you suppose? But, no, you don't. And guess, just guess, what I would call that.

Ah, they always crawl out after midnight.

17. Of course you have a problem with him. He is pissing all over the
republic party.

IMO, the farther away from Israel people are, the less likely it is that they are well informed about the realities of the Palestine/Israeli conflict.

I trust the people on the ground in Israel to make their own decisions.

Carter has spent much time there, but I surely do not consider him more informed than people on the ground in Israel. I do however, consider him more informed than myself and appreciate the opportunity to learn from his experience, whether some see him as guilty of anti-semitism or not.

25. Beautiful!
That's one of the best political bitch-slaps in recent memory! While I strive to emphasize compassion and civility now that we have the upper hand, it is nice to get some of those "Oh my god we lost?" Kerry/Edwards-day-after heebie-jeebies out, let off some minority steam.

We may be smarter, more loyal to our nation and to the principles of reason and public discourse on which it was founded, less prone to blindly accept authoritarian rule, less influenced by hokey superstitions and fear, but we are human after all, right?

27. Love it, he rocked. Still, I have a slight problem with calling them "the Republics."
Every time I hear them labeled "Republics" it brings to mind the Benjamin Franklin story:

The response is attributed to BENJAMIN FRANKLIN—at the close of the Constitutional Convention of 1787, when queried as he left Independence Hall on the final day of deliberation—in the notes of Dr. James McHenry, one of Maryland’s delegates to the Convention.

McHenry’s notes were first published in The American Historical Review, vol. 11, 1906, and the anecdote on p. 618 reads: “A lady asked Dr. Franklin, 'Well Doctor what have we got a republic or a monarchy.' 'A republic, replied the Doctor, if you can keep it.' ” When McHenry’s notes were included in The Records of the Federal Convention of 1787, ed. Max Farrand, vol. 3, appendix A, p. 85 (1911, reprinted 1934), a footnote stated that the date this anecdote was written is uncertain.

So, I think it's just a matter of time before the hyena-like Republicans start twisting Benjamin Franklin's words to anoint themselves as the representative party of the republic, if Democrats start widely referring to them as "the Republics."
