"It's hard to remember now, but before Social Security, nearly half of America's seniors lived in poverty. After a lifetime of playing by the rules and working hard, there was no guarantee of a secure retirement.

"My grandfather, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and a majority of Americans thought that was wrong.

"They believed that lifting our seniors out of poverty is a reflection of our nation's core values.

"That's why my grandfather signed the Social Security act seventy three years ago today. One of the great successes of the 20th Century, today Social Security lifts nearly 13 million seniors and 1.3 million children out of poverty.

"Back in 1935, a small minority did not share those values. They opposed the creation of Social Security because they believed that government should not have a role in ensuring a retirement with dignity or helping seniors stay out of poverty. They said, "You're on your own".

"John McCain agrees with that old way of thinking. Like President Bush, he wants to privatize our Social Security, turning it into a gamble with our futures, and making 8.6 million American seniors vulnerable to poverty. John McCain has even said Social Security is "a disgrace".

"I couldn't disagree more.

"Our Social Security isn't a disgrace; it's a compact, a trust between generations of Americans. It's a reflection of our values.

"On the 70th anniversary of Social Security, Americans stood together and said no to George Bush's attempt to privatize Social Security.

"On this anniversary, let's make sure John McCain hears the same message. Tell John McCain to keep his hands off of our Social Security."

6. The Iowa Democratic Party Released a New Vid too!
(new poster here!)

The Iowa Democratic Party just released a new addition to their "McCain vs Iowa" website today.

The video is pretty damn funny... and it hits McCain on his crappy health care plan.

Hilarious quote from the video, "Shaq challenged ME!"

just wanted to share!

16. Thanks!
Does anyone want to write a journal about that website/ video?

I think it would be good to encourage people to take this election to a local level. If we all work to push state by state issues, McCain has no chance-- he is going to try and push things like "barack is an international celebrity" "barack is barely a christian"

This is a pocketbook and policy election. Rural Health Care/ Health Care in general is a good opening... anyone agree?

here is the video

I love this website! can't believe it took me so long to get here!

i made this other silly website that i'll just share here for shits and giggles

5. Very Powerful Ad -- Let's Bury McCain with it.
McCainé's statement that "social security is a disgrace" should be use to pound him on a daily basis. Many older folks would be aghast to know that McCain intends to tear apart our social security program. Bush-Chaney-McCain tried to privatize it several years ago. Had they been successful in forcing people to open private stock market accounts, as they wished, millions of people would have lost money with the current economic downturn. Thank goodness the Democrat Party stood up against privatization. Preserving and protecting social security should be a key issue in Obama's campaign. It could effectively bury McCain, especially with his own, older demographic.

7. Even the hardcore 28-percenters have older relatives on SS,
and many of them are older folks on SS. They might think twice about voting for McCain if this sort of thing were widely publicized--but the MSM won't do it for us. We have to take the initiative.

10. Know who is most likely to vote in any given election?
Retirees. How many of them would be willing to give up that monthly Social Security check? My guess would be less than 1%--the same 1% that is Bush's base.

13. I guess I better spread the wod.
More than 1/2 my fellow townspeople are on SS. And they voted Bush in honestly in '04!
The way they calculate the SS payments now is bogus, excluding inflation of food & fuel. People on SS can't afford to buy anything OTHER THAN FOOD & FUEL! SO that sucks!
AND I know a lot of Boomer age people, who have to supplement their parents, because of that; and the medicare scam!
How are the Boomers KIDS going to support their old parents on 2 or 3 hamburger flipping jobs?
WHen I turned 60 I was eligible for a WIdow's Pension........BUT I wasn't allowed to earn more then $10,000, or they would take away, $1.00 fr every 2 earned over 10,000! I was offered a good job in my field, @ $9.00 per hour, and turned it down because the daily 65 mile commute, and the penalties, would have used up too much of it. ( I was driving a 19 year old car which would have required lots of repairs, but got 50 m p g. Another car would have used more in gas, the repairs would have been more expensive,) So instead of being ALLOWED to earn extra to out into an IRA, when I had energy................I COULDN"T
Now that I am 69 I am working as fast as I can,( slower than 9 years ago) to earn extra money, free lancing, but the tax laws are really unfavorable to doing that also!
SO see kid! This old lady is slaving to put money into YOUR SS account, with every buck I earn!
Unless you are in that "don't have to work because your money works FOR YOU" catagory we're ALL screwed!

21. go girl!
one thing that i have not seen written or heard, is the number of suicides committed, a single spouse or a husband/wife, before social security. my mom told me she would often hear her parents talking about someone in the neighborhood dying by suicide because they had no money and no family left to take care of them. she said she calculating in a few years time in her neighborhood 3 to 4 couples died by suicide due to poverty. many more because of no health insurance, no medicare.

i gladly payed into s.s. because i knew that if i did not then i would be responsible of caring for my parents and grandparents. i am now on s.s., i have a small pension. i am also at an age where i can work and not get penalized for it. i really think that john mccain thinks people over 65 have lived just too long anyways.

12. Great speech
Tremendous speech ... should have been on all of the news stations as part of the anniversary celebration. Typically MSM was too busy covering John Edwards infidelity for the "umpteenth" time. Let this speech be part of the convention, it is very powerful.

18. need the following changes
1) raise the taxable limit for from 125,000 to 1,000,000 for social security and link the the upper limit to inflation.

2) Treat Capital Gains same as income Beyond 500,000

3) Treat inheritance as income beyond 2,000,000

This will fix our deficits for good and will also fund the national health insurance.

24. Thank you for reminding us
As a woman who will be 66 next January, hitting that magic point that if I had to, I could retire with full benefits, I salute the Roosevelt family. He didn't say this but it was the Republicans that opposed SS. I know no one is surprised at that. But I also was eligible at the age of 13 in 1956 along with my brothers and sisters, until we hit 18, to collect due to the death of my father. Dad was an hourly worker, with no health insurance let along a pension, most companies didn't offer it, some did though. Social Security payments were the only thing that kept us going. I'd storm the Whitehouse before I will let anyone kill social security. I have 401k programs, but there are a lot of people who simply can't spare the money from their paychecks. We owe it to all citizens, because we care. I think that is one of the many things that separates the Democratic and Republican parties, and most especially Liberal vs. conservative. God Bless you Franklin Roosevelt.
