Our government has been fighting the War On Drugs since 1937. Seventy years later, maybe it's time to face the fact that it's a War On People.

Some staggering stats from this video:
- A marijuana arrest is made every 41 seconds in America – nine out of 10 of them for mere possession.
- In 2004, 772,000 Americans were arrested on marijuana charges – more than for all violent crimes combined.

2. Our drug war is racist to the core.
A quote from the first US drug czar, Harry J. Anslinger:
"I wish I could show you what a small marihuana cigarette can do to one of our degenerate Spanish-speaking residents. That's why our problem is so great; the greatest percentage of our population is composed of Spanish-speaking persons, most of who are low mentally, because of social and racial conditions."
Commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics during the hearings on the 1937 Marihuana Tax Act

4. Petition to allow farmers to grow industrial marijuana
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/375707069

Quickly stated:
Industrial Hemp is a agricultural crop that is legal to eat(hemp seed food products), wear(textile fiber), burn (biomass fuel), buy, sell, import, export. It only illegal to grow.

- Same plant species as marijuana, but it is distinguishable both genetically and chemically. If you smoke industrial hemp you get a headache not a high.

- All other industrialized nations, including Canada, France, and Britain, grow industrial hemp.

Imported yearly into the US
-12 million in hemp food products -40 million body care products with hemp ingredients

-Between 250 and 300 million worth of hemp products are sold yearly in the US

Most common use:
-cloth (shirts, pants, etc.)

Very good for paper production
- One acre of farmland growing hemp is the equivalent of 4 acres of woodland.
- Paper production methods are already established for Hemp
- It has been used in France for centuries to produce specialty papers for cigarettes and bibles.

Solve our Energy Crisis
- - Hemp produces competitive volumes of bio-fuels. This is a good crop for making biofuels such as ethanol, butanol and biodiesel.

Better for Environment and Farmers
- No Herbicide required ever and little insecticide needed
- Less chemicals means better environment and less cost for farmers

5. K&R.
It's a sick country that outlaws a mellow drug like marijuana but allows alcohol and tobacco. I was never hit by any of my pot-smoking-only boyfriends, but the hard-drinking men I dated caused me much physical and psychological pain. I'll bet that between the lung cancer, emphysema, liver failure, alcohol poisoning, drunk driving accidents, and physical abuse make tobacco and alcohol combined the leading cause of death and injury in the US.

6. Exactly.
I'm not a pot smoker, but I do have a heart and a mind. I wonder how many people we could feed, how many children we could educate and clothe with all of the money we're pouring into this senseless failure that we call the War On Drugs?
