Since 2000 everyone can agree that John McCain has changed. He now supports many of the positions he once derided. He has become the smiling-through-gritting-teeth champion against his own ideals. He has fallen in line behind the man and the organization that called him the "Manchurian Candidate" and the "fag candidate", that highlighted his wife's drug addiction, that smeared his service to his country, and said that he frequented prostitutes and had an illegitimate "black baby". Why would he embrace those he despised? Because now he is clearly focused on one singular goal: to win, take power, and vindicate himself.

It's been a long 7 years since McCain began his Faustian Bargain. You can easily tell that it's taken it's toll. Every disingenuous vote, every parroted talking point, and every compromise has chipped away at him bit... by.... bit. To the point that now, now he's almost unrecognizable.

So in honor of the man I once would've voted for, I now happily, as he would have wished it, denounce and mock the person he has become. You wanted to be president, but instead you're a parable.

4. Thanks for your work on the Obama campaign.
I agree. We need to do everything we can to keep McCain out of the White House. America can't endure another 4 years of Bush madness.

7. Thanks for posting.
It's a great and accurate portrait of a man I once kinda respected, even if I never would have voted for him. But then, I didn't know him as well as I do now.

Welcome to DU! K&R

10. It's good to be back.
Whenever I post a new video here I always find a friendly, receptive audience and receive excellent comments. Thanks.

McCain has struck me as kind of a tragic figure over the last couple years. This man has been in politics as long as I've been following it and he always seemed to be one of the more decent level-headed Republican in the Senate (for a Republican that is). It's been kind of a shock to watch his transformation since the 2000 election. It's almost like a slow decent into madness. Can you imagine what it was like for McCain to deliver a commencement address to Falwell and his college after the all disdain they showed toward one another? Or embrace Bush? Or voting against a torture ban? He must've been chanting to himself over and over again "gotta win the presidency" "gotta win the presidency"...

I guess lust for power will do that to you.

14. A slow decent into madness is a good way to describe it.
It's like he survived the Hanoi Hilton only to succumb to Stockholm Syndrome after the Republican party worked so hard to tear him to shreds in 2000. Sort of pitiful when you think about it.

15. I can't pity him
Not after he used the soldiers as pawns for his re-election campaign.

8. McCain is everyones problem!
That's cause every time he goes up or on the air, he is unsafe. We don't like him because he's dangerous!

I got that one from "Top Gun" by the way. :D

11. That's another thing he has in common with Bush
Bailed out by their fathers.

Can you imagine what would've happened to him after crashing all those jets if he wasn't an Admirals son? They probably would've yanked him out of the air.

Oh, to be so privileged. It must be rough. No wonder he thinks $5 Million is middle class!

16. WTF happened to McCain...
Its sad. His voice doesn't even sound the same. It's a higher pitch, and he grimaces as if he's forgotten how to smile. That's not even touching the fact that he sold his political soul, if in fact, he ever had one to begin with.

If it wasn't so nutty, I'd say they replaced McCain with a double. An evil twin.

17. I would say it happened fairly suddenly
Since on average McCain has voted with Bush over 90% of the time. II think it was less of a reaction to 9/11 than it was to the humiliating ass-whoopin he received from Bush and Rove. If you can't beat em join em, and that's what he did. It only became obvious when he approached Falwell (who McCain in 2000 referred to as among the "agents of intolerance) to kiss and make up in 2006. Colbert told a great joke about that at the White House Correspondents Dinner:

"By the way, Senator McCain, it's so wonderful to see you coming back into the Republican fold. I have a summer house in South Carolina; look me up when you go to speak at Bob Jones University. So glad you've seen the light, sir."

The depth of that compromise combined with his advancing age did him in. Now he's a soulless talking points machine with a creepy grin plastered on his face. And so far it seems like he'd do anything for the Presidency, including referring to his opponent as the anti-christ, making a creationist his Vice Presidential pick, and attempting to Hurricane Gustav as the backdrop to a photo op.

I'm wondering what kind of concession speech McCain's going to give on election night. It ain't gonna be pretty.

18. And besides, as you pointed out...
... he didn't have much of a soul to begin with.
