This is the first part of a video report made by Sean Smith that shows the life and death of US soldiers (101st Airborne) serving in Iraq during the summer of 2008. The footage is raw and unfiltered. WARNING: curse words are audible!

The report was first shown on BBC TV in the UK on September 10th. It was also shown on the weekly edition of "Newsnight" on BBC America on September 12th. I already made a couple of posts about it on the General Discussion forum.

Part 2 is here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnU0fuzvrTQ

You can also watch the full 17 minute report online via the BBC News website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/newsnight/7609592.stm

This new report is the latest in a series of photo and video reports made by Sean Smith. You can find more of them on the website of The Guardian (England's original liberal newspaper): www.guardian.co.uk/world/series/seansmithiraq

Here is another video that was made by Sean Smith back in October 2006: www.guardian.co.uk/video/page/0,,1927660,00.html
The same video is also on YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=22pfqQRL7mQ

If you are a YouTube member - please take a few clicks to go give these videos 5-star ratings and add them to your favorites. Maybe also post your comments on YouTube where they will maybe reach a wider audience than here on DU.

Finally - please keep this kicked and rec'd for your fellow DUers! :patriot:

5. War is not profitable. Not to the Nation as a whole.
This report from the Center for Economic and Policy Research say that after 10 years of the two wars employment will decrease by almost 1/2 a million jobs, housing costs will go up, and inflation will go up.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/48651/The-Economic-Impact-of-the-Iraq-War-and-Higher-Military-Spending

It is a vastly common misconception amongst many Americans that war helps out an economy. Of course it helps the Military Industrial Complex, but there are more sectors to our economy than that.

Look at Great Britian, once a vast empire, but the effects of World War 2, and the Treaty of Yalta, took them down several notches. No longer did they have their vast empire, and no longer did they have their domestic industrial capacity.

Peace!

7. 40 years ago the guys in my unit would have said the same thing those guys said.
Thank goodness we didn't have to do three tours.

I wish more Republicans would see this.
