9. I'm witnessing the fruits of the systematic dumbing down of America.
Edited on Sun Sep-28-08 01:20 PM by bulloney
15-20 years of RW talk radio has convinced more than four out of 10 Americans that Republicans have done and currently do everything right and the Democrats never have and never will do anything right.

These people have seen their jobs leave the country. If they're employed, they're holding 2 or more jobs and making less than they did from the job they lost. They're maintaining their standard of living on debt. Their homes are deteriorating. They're drving cars held together with baling wire and duct tape.

In the 50 years I've been alive, 30 of them have been under Republican administrations. Almost every one of them have been marked by recessions and/or corruption, increased debt, and war.

And this is better than the alternative?

Despite the near-collapse of our economy, despite evidence that we attacked Iraq on a pack of lies from a Republican administration, costing us hundreds of billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of lives, despite seeing and hearing the Republican candidates for President and VP setting new standards for lying and buffoonery every time they speak, despite the obvious fact that Palin is grossly unqualified for the VP role, people will still beligerently argue in support for this ticket and this party.

And it's not like this period of time is just an aberration. Read your history on the Great Depression and see who was in power in the years leading up to and during the start of the GD.

44. "convinced more than four out of 10..."
That's one of the most maddening things of all. I know Cheney/Bush's approval rating is in the toilet, but there are still millions of folks out there who Dubya could waltz into their double-wide this afternoon, rob them at gunpoint, and take a dump on the rug before he left, and they would STILL insist that he was a wonderful leader, and thank God HE'S the president instead of Gore or Kerry.

But you can't blame it all on talk radio. For most of the past x-ty years Democrats simply didn't fight back. We thought we were taking the high road, not getting dragged down to their level. And we stood by as the RW turned "liberal" into a slur and equated "conservative" with "good American" and "liberal" with "traitor." We've got to take some of the blame on ourselves.

56. That's what I really love about Obama.
Sure, his policies are much, much, much closer to my own philosophies than those of any national republicon. But more than that I admire the fact that he stands up for himself. Same with Teddy Kennedy. I was born in 1966...I have no memory of--and no time for wallowing in--Camelot. The Kennedys have enough skeletons in their personal and political closets to last for centuries, and the fact that a few of them have decided to "give back" doesn't impress me any more than any non-Kennedy who does the same. But you can't deny that Teddy has stood up for liberal, progressive principals even when it was least popular to do so. I hope he's doing OK this morning.

10. Her Russia inanities were due to her trying not to let loose with her apocalytpic, Pentecostal views

I suspect she's very fluent in Pentecostelese. She's just holding back. I hope Biden nudges her into that idiom somehow so that she gets going on Living in the Word Thursday night until the cat's out of the bag. Remember that scene in the last episode of Rome where the soldier who suspected a slave boy was Caesarion just casually spoke to him in the idiom of Egyption pharoah worship, and out it came. Someone interviewer really needs to gently nudge this out of her.

She's an arrogant fool on most of the issues, to be sure, but I think what we saw on the clip about Putin and Russia was not just her not being able to come up with something, but also knowing that she couldn't let go and say, "Alaska is the last front in God's war on Satan. We are the battleground between the forces of communism (she'd still consider them communist) in Russia and the seductive evil of liberal socialism in Canada. We are the final frontier where those who are strong in the Lord will join to fight the holy war as foretold in Revelations 4 point whatever against the multi-headed antichrist, whose tentacles include the United Nations and other tools of Satan in the mideast who are fighting to destroy Israel. While the battle rages for the promised land and Christ returns, Alaska will be the last haven for those Living in the Word against the Beast, through which we will all be raptured up to heaven to usher in a reign of 1000 years of Christian rule . . . . " yada, yada, yada

_That's_ what she really believes gives Alaska a special role in dealing with Russia.

12. THIS is why we laugh...
...and why I, and those I know, are perilously close to tears;

The inability for many to think for themselves is our biggest threat; and one that the republican party is depending on to win this election. We are gambling on the ignorance of masses; are thoughtful, sufficiently educated people in the United States the majority or the minority?

We will find out November 4th.

Palin has that obnoxious "Sir, yes sir", do as you're told and follow orders mentality mixed with the arrogant know-it-all, I've got it figured out (because my preacher told me)you get, not from atheists (where it rarely comes from), but from Fundies. This can only sincerely survive in a closed, cut off place....like Alaska (or a cult compound or mega-church). It can only thrive among its own, with little input from the outside world. That's why it's falling apart on the world stage. Not only for Palin, but for Bush and his ilk as well. (Remember, Bush really doesn't care or believe any of the born again malarkey, but Sarah DOES believe in that crap)It's a sad joke and has nothing to offer the future of America or Mankind for that matter.

Palin makes a great lackey, but is no leader or thinker.

However, as historically inaccurate as the bible can be, people ride asses and horses. No mention of dinos except maybe as the 'giants' who walked the earth and were seen no more.

34. Meanwhile, here is what I found in today's Columbus Dispatch.
Will southwest (Ohio) produce another GOP landslide?
(Columbus Dispatch, September 29, 2008)

But before the Alaska governor came along, McCain and his occasional streaks of political moderation left a number of voters here less than enthused. "McCain wouldn't have been my first choice, but I'm certainly more in his camp with his vice presidential choice," said Roger Denny, 56, a lumber trader from Lebanon, after lunch at the Skyline Chili there. He likes that she's "running on a reform campaign, hopefully cleaning up Washington."

Tom Calvert, 66, a retired teacher from Lebanon, said he wishes the vice presidential nominees were at the top of both tickets. "If I had to choose from all four of them, I'd probably elect Palin," Meredith Dwire, 33, who co-owns a garden center in Lebanon, said, "I love Sarah Palin. She's more of a regular person, not a typical political person, which I like."

(snip)

In the town of Monroe, where voter turnout in 2004 was about 80 percent, Ernie Wilson has been cutting hair at Ernie's Hair Place for 50 years. As the election draws closer, political talk heats up, and Wilson said he hears quite a bit about Palin.

"The one thing I hear all the time is that when she got elected (governor), she said she was going to change things, and she sold that state jet right away," he said.

There is more in this vein. The article left me shaking my head with shame for my fellow Ohioans in the Fox-infested SW corner of our otherwise great state. The ignorance displayed is breathtaking.

One thread running through all of the favorable Palin comments here is "I don't want a political expert in the White House, I want someone just like me." WTF? Would these same people have this same attitude toward the crew of a 747 jetliner that was about to fly them across the Atlantic? Would we hear "I don't want some fancy aviation insider up there in the cockpit, I want someone just like me"? Would they insist on having a pilot or co-pilot whose entire flying experience came from living near an airport? One who had never actually been in a cockpit before? I doubt it. So why do they care so much less about America?

I will never, ever understand the Republican "mentality". Most of the things they say, as in this article, sound literally insane to me, in the sense of being totally disconnected from the reality of the situation. How did these people get like this? What are we going to do about them?

40. She's not intelligent. She's not smart. She's not clever. She's stuck .
Edited on Mon Sep-29-08 08:36 AM by higher class
She's stuck in a radical church and reverend-church well - a deep well down in an Alaskan valley - no scope to the world. They have put blinders on her. She can't even see herself.

This was all about DEBT carried forward from the Cheney administration. The Republicans promised the reverends plenty of roe-wade type favors in exchange for the delivery of votes the reverends were in charge of and Cheney did not deliver enough pay back. The reverends got plenty of their people into government jobs (especially the DOJ and Pentagon) and they co-created plenty of hate for Moslems and Mexicans, but they did not reverse Roe-Wade, nor did they close down the UN, nor did they get to put their engraved Commandments in the courhouse to start the list. AND TO TOP IT ALL - Cheney did not write an Executive Order for George to sign giving them everything they wanted.

So they told McCain - give us a VP - Palin or we won't barnstorm for war or the election or we won't deliver our portion of the 30-37% of your solid base, plus most of the margin.

Cheney wanted generated wealth for his baron bosses and friends, they wanted Christian Evangelical domination. Both wanted to go and still want to go for THE GOLD - profit and doctrine gold.

There is only one good thing you can say about the radical religious agenda - there are very few secrets in it.
