This is not super graphic but it still might disturb some people so I mentioned it just to be safe. The man's privates are blurred out and they do not actually show him hitting the ground. The important part is Cenk's point about how widespread tasering has become!

1. in Canada 23 people so far killed with these things
but still they are calling the taser non-lethal. It was something else ... "excited delirium" (not a term known to medicine, but increasingly used by sympathetic coroners. The worst thing is the people killed by tasers INSIDE A JAIL CELL, restrained, surrounded by cops who just won't take no dis, apparently.

3. How did they die?
Maybe that's a stupid question, but I'm assuming those deaths weren't anything like the one described in this video.

8. not falling on their heads, no, generally cardiac arrest
Tasering, often multiple times, then death, most often right at the scene or after CPR and a frenzied trip to the ER. The cops are saying that even though they died after tasering, it wasn't the taser that caused death. The manufactures have more or less invented the condition of "excited delirium" which is the reason they get tasered but after they die all of a sudden it is a CAUSE of death. All of them are cardiac arrests but they really do not know how to identify at autopsy death by tasering. People with underlying conditions are at greater risk, and often those who are drugged up or mentally ill are thought to have died of THESE "underlying conditions". I don't have a link to the notorious video of the cops tasering a Polish guy at the Vancouver airport after 23 seconds of "assessment" of the situation. He had been in the airport for 10 hours looking for his mother to pick him up. She had been told that he never arrived. No one looked for anyone to translate. Cops lied about being threatened. Guy with a cell phone camera blew the lid off this one which is still an international incident. Of course foirst thing the cops did was confiscate his cell phone. Only the courts made them give it back intact.

2. whats the difference in the taser and just beating some one to death with a night stick?
Nothing the person's just as dead.

4. The cops are here to protect and serve.
So, if you're feeling a little suicidal, they'll protect your choice to kill yourself and serve you straight into the afterlife.

5. I'm weird. . .suicide is only illegal if you fail at it?
Cops called on suicide attempts drive me insane. Nothing like putting an unbalanced person in the hands of amateur maven psychologists like cops with handcuffs and the power to destroy a person's life with a criminal record.

And of course, there are such great counseling services in the jail, right? I mean, no one ever commits suicide in a jail, right?

Dumbass cops. . .someone should tase their ass like Michael Myers did to a couple of his victims in the Halloween movies.

7. Without tasers they would have shot him.
I debate Police shootings. There are Cops that join in these debates. The biggest problem with police shooting is what I call the 1 Second Investigation. The scope of the investigation is confined to the exact second the officer pulled the trigger. Not one second before or one second after. The could not have done a damned thing right up to the second he pulled the trigger. As long as the officer believes the person to be an immediate and credible threat to life or limb when he pulled the trigger. It will be ruled a good shooting. Even if the suspect is unarmed and naked. I've already debated that one. He didn't have a have a light bulb. But without Taser they will go back to using their guns. I think you'll find guns have a much higher fatality rate.

9. someone I read about trained response teams
specifically to deal with agitated and apparently mentally ill people. It might even be here. Basically they do what seems to be the common sense thing, de-escalate the situation, make the person at ease. Talk them calm and co-operative. Not so good with a guy perched on a ledge, maybe, but as long as he wants to talk and they are skilled listeners it beats knocking him off the ledge before he can jump. This is I think really useful with agitated people brandishing a weapon, a knife or a piece of wood, or some random object, people who are not apparently about to assault anyone but who are armed more or less defensively, to keep others away. These folks do get shot, or tasered, at distances where no officer is in immediate danger because they do not obey "drop the ________, kneel, etc" It's easy to say (lie) "he was starting for me". Mostly cops li come in too impatient, noisy, too adrenaline-pumped, all wrong for defusing these situations, and then they want to get it over with immediately and that is why the taser is so popular. Also because it is a handy "take that, punk" response. For many of them, it is fun, aggression they are unlikely to have to answer for. That is unfortunately a very human response.
