McCain Urges Bush To Spend $1 Trillion On Bailout -- Without Congressional Approval
Jed Lewison

I'm not making this up. John McCain today urged the Bush Administration -- on more than one occasion -- to immediately and uniliterally spend $1 trillion buying up home mortgages.

I was watching live when he made the proposal this morning, and it seemed like such a staggeringly insane idea that I assumed he couldn't be serious. He couldn't think that Bush should just spend $1 trillion without asking Congress for permission...could he?

But then I saw his economic adviser try to back the idea up, and then I saw McCain make the proposal again during the NBC Nightly newscast. So he's serious. He really thinks that Bush should just spend $1 trillion without talking to Congress, without seeking approval, without building any sort of consensus -- without getting any protections whatsoever for taxpayers.

Update: Here's video of him making the proposal on three separate occasions Tuesday.

This is the same John McCain who just a couple of days ago was railing on the $1 trillion price tag of the bailout (when it was actually $700 billion).

But just a few days after railing against the unbridled power of government, McCain now seems to envision the presidency as a dictatorship. He now thinks that Bush should just spend $1 trillion without allowing anyone to ask any questions -- and he supports doing it just one day after the House of Representatives voted down a $700 billion bailout.

This won't suprise anyone on the left. The question I have is this: when are conservatives going to wake up and realize that despite all his bluster about being a conservative, the Republican nominee for president has proposed the single largest expenditure in the history of this nation -- and that he's proposed that it be made without the approval of Congress?

3. Uh, excuse me, but don't treasury funds come from taxpayers?
He's suggesting that, instead of $700 billion, Main Street should pay $1 trillion?

8. Bush could simply do this with a "pre-signing statement"
Which would be every bit as legitimate as a signing statement.

A signing statement is that magic pen exercise that says Bush can ignore anything in the law.

A pre-signing statement is the equivalent exercise for ignoring anything that isn't in the law.

4. OMG! bypass congress?, this proves he's just like Bush...
He believes in the Imperial presidency. just like "war on terror", bush doctrine- he says here that the Executive branch has power to do pretty much anything it wants without Congressional(citizen rep.) approval. This is fukin scary.

The additional 700 billion will push this rip off of the Amurikan public by the BFEE well past 1.3 trillion dollars.

7. wtf?
yeah i think that if mccain becomes president then nothing will turn around. in fact the very country we love will crash into almost no value at all. its bad enough we have sold our country to the oil CEOs. but what the fuck do i know im not into politics and im definately not into debates. i could care less who is president as long as they think about the people before their own fucking pockets. and i dont care if they help my family. just as long as they help a family that needs it more then i do. its rediculous what they are doing as far as bailing out a bunch of up tight dick heads in wallstreet before they bail out millions of people with no homes or no value on their homes. it makes me sick when rich get richer and poor get poorer. there needs to be a middle ground here and people need to stop talking about what they are going to do and fucking do it. and im not just refering to the potential presidents. im talking to all the people who cant be heard. do something about it, even if it means going against your morals or beliefs. ill die before i let some rich punk get his money back. even if it means extreme action. and usa if you dont like it then fucking fix it.
