Kristol was instrumental in getting McCain to accept Palin. I think Kristol, more than any other neo-con with the exception of Bush, defines the anti-Midas touch.

Twenty-four hours later, they were energized -- even exuberant. It's amazing what a bold vice-presidential pick who gives a sterling performance when she's introduced will do for a party's spirits.

There are Republicans who are unhappy about John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin. Many are insiders who highly value -- who overly value -- "experience." There are also sensible strategists who nervously note just how big a gamble McCain has taken.

But what was McCain's alternative? To go quietly down to defeat, accepting a role as a bit player in The Barack Obama Story? McCain had to shake up the race, and once he was persuaded not to pick Joe Lieberman, which would have been one kind of gamble, he went all in with Sarah Palin.

Some media mandarins were upset. One reporter noted that -- horrors! -- Palin had never even appeared on "Meet the Press." Time's Joe Klein remarked disapprovingly that McCain didn't know Palin well and had never worked with her. He noted by contrast "that when Walter Mondale picked Geraldine Ferraro in 1984, House Speaker Tip O'Neill, who had worked with Ferraro, was not only vouching for her, but raving about her."

They obviously need to stop preaching to their pinheaded choir and do some REAL interviews with REAL journalists, in which they offer REAL answers to tough questions. But this is evidently what passes for "reason" on Faux Nooze.

I agree that they will jump back to their old ways at the first sight of fresh blood but something's got them stuck. I think they are biding their time for some kind of October surprise. Even McCain turned around over night and got all creepy smiley again. I hope to God Obama is being protected by secret service 24/7. Something is up.

For all the "anything can happen in 24 days" bit, it's really not a "political truism." It's a political fallacy. McCain got a normal convention bump that maybe extended a day or two longer than usual because of the Palin novelty act. It faded, as they always do. With the exception of that 10 days, McCain has been behind the entire election season. It doesn't "change in 24 days.' It never does. They look at counties where Mccain should be getting 65%, and he's polling at 56%. That's over. Over. These aren't unstable systems. They are almost always slow as molasses in their transformations. Mccain/Palin made their big push this week and it failed miserably. Miserably.

Stay out there and fighting. But...

:P But I remember being so elated before the 2000 election so sure that the Republicans looked like such pathetic cartoons, especially after that Democratic convention and the poor performance of * in the presidential debates....I was SO SURE we had it in the bag. I got the same feeling before each subsequent election, I was sure we won, based on such obvious discrepancies...and the GOP got in despite everything.
I will not let down my guard until after the election. This is the party that enabled trillions of our dollars to be stolen, and I just cannot fall for their feigned weakness again.
