1. McCain was talking about this plummer today....
...during one of his rallies. McCain made it seem like Obama told this regular guy kind of plummer that his taxes will go up, in order to pay for people who don't make as much. ...McCain never mentioned that the plummer was talking about an income of more than a quarter of a million dollars.

I wonder if this guy was a plant.

15. Theirs.
It would be a dirty trick on their part.

Get a plummer (who doesn't make, -BUT plans to make $250,000) to ask Obama about increased taxes. This way McCain could honestly say that Obama told a plummer he will pay more taxes in order to the "spread the wealth" to people who make less.

11. I think so
And said so in an earlier thread.

This happened on Sunday - it's all over the crazy right wing sites and McCain is bringing it up. Apparently Faux news tracked him down and he, "coincidentally" repeated the same "spread the wealth around" talking point as to his inability to support Obama.

I'm calling bullshit on it. If this was just some guy that they didn't know they would not have been so confident that Obama hadn't won him over.

3. You're ruining the American Dream
Wow, the guy who had the question had to have started from an angry position to make such a bold Statement. The way that Obama explained it to him was so clear that even though he received news that he probably didn't want to hear, it appeared that he could at least appreciate the reasoning. I really liked the point that he made regarding having more customers who can pay for this person's services. Boy he's good.

4. Like the guy said, "nice".
He offers up a good counter to the Republican stereotype about liberals wanting to raise everybody's taxes, while at the same time showing sympathy and concern for the struggling taxpayer.

"Yes, your taxes might go up, but not by much, and in my opinion, it will be worth the benefit to the country as a whole. If you don't agree, and I can understand why you wouldn't, then that's up to you, but I don't think McCain's going to give you a better deal."

17. Obama knocked it out of the park
That's actually part of why I feel so certain that the guy was a McCain campaign plant. To get that kind of personal and in depth answer to your question - to have someone make so much sense - and the guy still walks away ready to trash Obama?

That the right wingers were so positive that it wouldn't blow up in their faces when they started jumping on this? How could they be so sure that he wouldn't end up sounding like an Obama commercial by the time they tracked him down for an interview?

Obama is impressive beyond belief with this guy and yet they "know" that he wasn't won over? Smells fishy!

19. That whole McCain not knowing how SS works should be held against him...
...or at the very least, the tape of him talking about how it's 'nuts' that young people working today are being taxed to pay for our now SS recipients.

If seniors heard that McCain doesn't want to continue the age old practice of SS, they'd be up in arms.

37. UPDATE: "Joe the Plumber" is from AZ and he is a relative of Charles Keating!! LOL!
Joe “the Plumber” Wurzelbacher related to Charles “the Crook” Keating. Oops

They thought they had a real live Joe Six-Pack who’s spurned Barack Obama’s tax plan. But what they forgot to do was check on Joe Wurzelbacher’s background.

Turns out that Joe Wurzelbacher from the Toledo event is a close relative of Robert Wurzelbacher of Milford, Ohio. Who’s Robert Wurzelbacher? Only Charles Keating’s son-in-law and the former senior vice president of American Continental, the parent company of the infamous Lincoln Savings and Loan.

The now retired elder Wurzelbacher is also a major contributor to Republican causes giving well over $10,000 in the last few years.

38. In a sense, I'm Joe the plumber with a difference.
A little background.

I started my business (s-corp) 8 years ago in industrial distribution and have drifted to manufacturing through a stroke of craziness and luck. I was in the right place at the right time and when asked if I could build something I said yes. I never built a damn thing in my life.
I took on the challenge with major support from friends and family (couldn't have done it myself) and, long story short, now have a patent and a growing list of products that I provide to a niche environmental market. In essence, pure dumb luck and perseverance. I joke that I am too dumb to know that I couldn't possibly succeed.

Anyway, I haven't made great living up to this point (the most I have paid myself is $36K/year) but we get by with my salary and my wife's (dental assistant) salary. The kids are grown and we don't spend a lot.
This year I stand a very good chance (depending on what invoices are paid this year) that I will be over that $250K threshold. Am I supposed to forget all those years that I have been screwed by the republican tax policies and all of a sudden say "I got mine so screw everyone else" I don't think so.

I am set up as a s corporation which means that any net income I have shows up as my personal income. The reason you set up as an s corp is so that the money isn't taxed twice ( corporation taxed and then money dispersed taxed) Let's not kid ourselves. There is a tax advantage to it.
So I may end up being taxed at 39% (pre-Reagan tax rate)..that's OK. But that's if I don't do anything to drop my tax liability. Joe the plumber mentioned that if he wanted to buy a truck he couldn't. He needs an accountant. By purchasing a new trunk he would lessen his tax liability because of the business expense. Anything else his spends before the end of the year would also lessen his tax liability. If he is lucky he may even drop his overall liability under the 250K threshold.
I am no accountant and barely have a grasp on those things but I do know that if I finally make that kind of money it isn't right to all of a sudden say I got mine so screw everyone else.
I guess that's why I'm a democrat. There is nothing wrong with giving something back when you have a little success. Frankly, it's not asking al that much.
Barack was also right explaining to the guy that if his customers have more to spend then he makes more. It's common sense.

Sorry for the ramble...I'm not much of a writer.

41. I just heard on the news that Joe here, doesn't even have plumbing certification...
He says he doesn't need it because he works for a company that is certified. Now, I must admit that I am not familiar with plumbing and the necessary certification needed however, I do find it quite strange that he is making these grand plans to buy the company and he is not certified yet. Seems a little weird.

Anyway, I saw a clip of him on one of the morning programs today and he expressed an immense hatred and anger for Social Security. He gave the traditional republican spiel about how he doesn't need the government demanding what he does with his money. He can take care of himself.

Later on today, I heard a report indicating that Mr. Joe the Plumber is behind on his taxes. 'Splains a lot, doesn't it?
