18. ^^Exactly. It isn't rocket science to figure out the responsibilities of the VP.
Elementary school students have a better grasp on the position duties than this chick. I can't believe she said the VP gets to "get in there" and create policy in the Senate.

32. I couldn't quite put my finger on it until now...
but I think I can see why I don't really like her voice. It's not her fake, affected dialect. She uses this same voice during her speeches at times as like she's talking to a group of children. And I don't mean to paint women with a broad brush, but her voice is not normal for a woman of her age. Most women, especially women in some sort of powerful position, have "learned" to put a little base in their voice. A fuller, lower ?octave? comes with changes due to age, but women just naturally use a basier voice in order to project authority. I know some will disagree...I just don't like that broad!

3. I hope Brandon (or Piper) didn't take that answer as gospel
The Vice President has no other duty in the Constitution but to preside over the Senate and to vote in case of a tie. The Vice President is not "in charge" of the Senate and only has as much influence as this or that senator gives him (her).

Although the Constitution specifies no such position, the Senate Majority Leader is the one who sets the legislative agenda.

Were I a teacher grading that answer, I might give her one point out of a possible three, but that would be if I were in a charitable mood. It's better than the zeroes she's been getting.

My "Teaching Reading in the Content Fields" prof in college talked just like that! She had been a kindergarten teacher for ten years and just couldn't shut it off when teaching secondary ed majors. We all hated her.

15. You know I never
Went to college but if I were a VP pick you bet your damn ass I would at least learn the basics before I go shooting my mouth off about something I know nothing about. Especially if I had done the Katie Couric interview and failed like she did.

23. As far as I know, VP can preside as a formality but NOT control legislation, votes, etc.
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 06:59 PM by JoeIsOneOfUs
just formally preside (recognize people to speak, etc.) The Majority Leader is the one in charge of the Senate. Senators control committee assignments, which is where bills really move forward. In practice, freshmen senators do most of the presiding (stuck in that chair with the gavel) and all the senators take turns; senior senators are either leading committee hearings, writing the legislation, negotiating, etc.

I don't think Cheney has set foot more than a few times in the Senate since the Dems got a real majority, has he?

30. I just had this debate with my partner and I haven't a clue
I see the State of the Unions and you have Cheney and Pelosi. She is the leader of the House and so I just ASSumed that Cheney was representin' the Senate, but my man tells me that as you stated, the Majority Leader is in charge in the Senate, and the reason we don't see him or her behind Dubya is because the State of the Union takes place in the House. I dunno if I buy that...I guess I'll check Wiki!

31. State of the Union is another instance of the VP formally leading the Senate
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 07:44 PM by JoeIsOneOfUs
but it's like a royal figurehead thing.

I am, however, looking forward to having Biden in that chair instead :)

Will post Senate page with their procedures in a minute:
