Anger, Fear and Racism Follow Palin Rally

By Matt Toplikar -- Las Vegas Sun
Wed, Oct 22, 2008

A group of 10-20 Obama backers gathered in front of Henderson Pavilion's
gates during Gov. Sarah Palin's speech. As McCain/Palin supporters
exited the rally, many became enraged at the sight of the protest.

6. those are frightening people
It's one thing to have a difference of opinion with another person.

McCain and especially Palin have encouraged this sort of attitude and behavior in their speeches and advertisements.

When McCain finally tried to tell an audience that Obama is a decent man and that they shouldn't be afraid of an Obama presidency, he was booed by his own supporters.

It sure is an ugly time in this country.

12. those are frightening people
I'm trying to try to put that hate into some kind of historical perspective in my own mind. It's not something most of us see on a daily basis in our lives. Old film clips of the desegregation efforts in the South come to mind, as do some of the clashes between anti and pro war crowds during Vietnam. The women in that video are especially disturbing. One almost comes to expect that kind of hatred being expressed by men, but these women are ahead of the curve.

35. The women that protest at women's clinics have incredible rage.
I was told by the men that they were with that it was called "righteous anger" and that only kind that was "seemly" in a Christian woman.

Fundie women are allowed to be angry or assertive only when it's in defense of someone else. There's a lot that gets bottled up, I imagine.

25. Obama and Biden always respond to the audience's responses
Both of these men demonstrate the kind of leadership we need. In the clips I have seen anytime the audience starts boo-ing, etc. they both say words to the effect of "hey, we don't need that kind of behavior or thinking, we just need you to vote". What a striking difference from McShame and PaLIEn.

29. Also they believe evey e-mail letter they get without looking up the facts.
My husband had another doctor track him down and he handed him some fake literature about Obama. My husband thought it was true and I looked it right up on snopes.com and it was false ....the whole thing! Even educated people believe what they want to believe so they can keep voting for McCain. It is pathetic. These people obviosly have read all that stuff on line and believe it without looking it up. I have a feeling that racial tensions will be high once Obama wins because of eveything Palin and McCain have been doing. Sad state of our country that you think you can win over and over by fooling your own followers. These people are being used and they don't even know it.

10. The good news?
If early returns are any indication, we're going to roll right over those ignorant, hate filled clods and we'll end up making their lives a little better whether they're grateful or not.

Sounds like the Obama rally here in NM has just ended, lots of sirens heading toward the airport.

14. what do you think these nut cases are going to do?
I think the vast majority will settle down and go to work on Monday. They have too much to lose to start rioting. Rioting is usually done by people who have nothing to lose.

And that guy that said he will move to Alaska if Obama wins? Two to one he stays right where he is.

They grumble and piss and moan, but after the Big Game is over and they end up on the losing side, they will huddle together, lick their wounds and console each other until they get sick of each other.

33. "Rioting is usually done by people who have nothing to lose."
Students went on a rampage in New Orleans during the sixties in protest of desegregation orders. It was nasty. The quick action of the school administration kept it from being a bloodbath. All of the schools that had to pass through that area were put on lock down so there would be no confrontations.

The kids on the rampage were not lower income kids with nothing to lose.

15. "NO SOCIALISM!!!!!! NO SOCIALISM!!!"
Edited on Sun Oct-26-08 12:37 AM by JBShakes
Out of my own sense of morbid curiosity and my need to turn everything into a sports betting analogy - what do you think the odds are that more than a dozen of these folks can accurately SPELL socialism, much less define it?

18. They haven't been encouraged to think
They've been conditioned to react.

I would imagine that the definition would go something like this:

"Socialism means you're a communist and you want to take my money and put it in your pocket!"

I can't say as I blame them for not wanting that to happen. We live in a society that has evolved into in such a way that all who earn or spend money must pay a portion to the common fund to be used for the common good. It's the definition of common good that gets people tied up in knots. Some people think that the common good is best served by a good thorough-going missile bombardment of Iraq. Others think that the money would be better spent on social services like education and health care.

And there is the great racial divide that some would rather not acknowledge or deal with. I think that, as much as anything, is at the heart of the anger we are witnessing. I was born in a housing project in 1948 near a shipyard. My parents moved there for the work from the east coast. We were white and the project building next to us was black. My mom was friendly with a black family there and left us with Elizabeth and her kids when she went to work. Elizabeth had a great grandmother staying with her who was born into slavery. And it is just in the last fifty years or so that the remaining codification of apartheid in America has been removed from the last of the law books.

I think a lot of these people are afraid of the Brave New World that they see coming their way.

26. Freeper says," I'm not stupid. I have a degree in criminal justice."
If I paid my local county college my tuition money and wasted enough time, I could have one of those ridiculous diplomas too. Any idiot with a job can get a degree in criminal justice, thanks to subsidized education (socialism).

to go to the next McCain rally. Obama shirts on underneath and not visible. When McCain comes out everyone just take off their red shirt and show their blue ones. Peaceful protest.

32. I do not fear these people
I pity them. It's McCain that should fear these people. If he doesn't speak out against this shit soon, he is dead in the water along with all the incumbent repugs. McCain should be encouraging his supporters to confront these idiots and shut them up, because soon no self-respecting republican (and yes, I do believe there are decent republicans out there too), will be running a thousand miles in the other direction. Maybe not toward Obama, but they will definitely be staying home on election day. The party needs to make it clear that those who ain't agin this racist bullshit, are implicitly for it.
