3. I thought it was excellent
The stories were compelling and flowed well. The half hour went quickly and I liked the switch to the rally. MSNBC is calling it a sales pitch, and if so it was a good one.

5. Barack should change one thing on his site
Edited on Wed Oct-29-08 07:44 PM by Reform
Not to get anal here or to sound like a freeper but, Barack did say in the 30 min ad that anyone under $200 000 will not see their taxes go up, but on his site it still says $250 000
Can anyone clarify the change on this stance so i can get out there and debate these knuckle dragging neocons?
Or did i miss something?
I can almost guarantee you this will be the last stance that repubs will use.
Other than that the ad pulls at the heart strings of America, well done

36. Same here.

Thanks to those who clarified it. The thing is, I questioned that also, and I follow what is going on more than the average "Joe," though not as much as many on this site. To the average person who keeps hearing 250, the 200 may sound like it has changed. Which is never a good thing. I must admit, I am often a person who is told that I only hear the negative side of things.

41. Good point. Fox News has been going apeshit over this for days.
Edited on Thu Oct-30-08 08:13 AM by ExPatLeftist
Following the McCain playbook obviously - the message is that the numbers are creeping lower and in the end it will include everyone. Muahahaha. Based on that spin, I think this could have been presented better.

Fucking repubs always go for the fear card. Fortunately, I think it may have been overplayed by Bushco, and many people are not falling for it anymore.

I cannot imagine a Dem calling a republican a "terrorist", "socialist" and "unAmerican" and not get crucified for it. When McCain loses, I hope the fearmongering GOP will either die or reconsider its methods.

15. From the perspective of Media Effects research
I thought the infomercial was very good, very well done, lots of good information. It will be impossible to assess any direct effect from it, except for any sudden rush of donations and calls after it concluded. Were any minds and votes potentially influenced?

Based on the research done in media effects by communication scholars and social psychologists, we might hypothesize the following:

For strong McCain supporters, no effect, assuming any watched. At this point, any dissonant information will be suppressed or dismissed.

For weak McCain supporters, it could weaken their support if any of the MANY appeals launched struck any chords. Might not cause a switch to Obama by itself, but might decrease enthusiasm about bothering to vote, and if they get reinforcement over the next week, could contribute to a switch.

For genuine undecideds: Might well have an effect. There is a seldom cited theory called the "drench effect," that suggests a person "drenched" with a flood of information at once can be influenced by it. Now, you'd really have to be a very low information seeker for this show to be totally new, but there was SO much info packed into it, that low info seekers might very well have learned enough new information about him to tip them toward Obama. This is important, because "late breaking undecideds" typically break conservatively. So, yeah, I think there is reason to be hopeful that undecideds who gave the 30-minutes a chance might walk away feeling better about Obama.

For weak Obama supporters, this show was a powerful reinforcer of so many have become so excited about this guy. Maybe a slight increase in their willingness to get out there and vote.

33. Outstanding and Moving...
Missed the spot on TV but thanks for posting here.

You can't help but be moved by what Barack is saying and how he really seems to connect with people. I've watched several of his speeches and realize he is what we need at this time in our history. The Republicans like to say he's all talk, etc., but he does one thing that no one can match...he inspires. There may be a lot of bad things going on in this country and in the world, but he seems like the very best person to lead this country. You hear McCain speak or Palin and it does nothing for me. When Barack talks he talks about things he'll do and how he wants to help everyone from all walks of life. All you hear from McCain and Palin are negative attacks, Joe the Plumber, etc, etc. Let's all hope and pray that Barack wins this thing.

After 30 years of Reaganesque greed, and 8 years of Bushian fear-mongering, I don't know how ANYONE - Republican, Democrat, Independent, None of the Above - can listen to Obama speak, and not think "This is EXACTLY the kind of POSITIVE, HOPEFUL,leadership that America NEEDS right now."

He believes what he is doing is right and
he’s doing things the right way.
