just minor but important refinements.
Jerry is used to talk show hosting and probably is used to
writing much of his own material.
His basic premise is sound, life is not just about ourselves.
His premise and argument about government role of protection
is not quite on the mark. Instead, without exception,
Government role is to hold the monopoly power on violence.
It grants or withholds the priviledge to use violence.
And enforces that right with violence (through police).
When Jerry says that government is there to protect us, that is an
incorrect (and I think dangerous, from a civil rights standpoint)
proposition. In fact, there is no legal duty for a police officer to
protect anyone. This may upset some people, so before flaming me
be please have your opposition legal citations available and checked,
for I doubt you will find any except for special cases (duty to protect
prisoner in custody).
Thus Jerry's argument proceeds from a false, although popular,
misconception. However, this is not fatal to his overall message
of community, which is sound of itself and does not need the
'government is there to protect us' as a premise.
We the people ... That doesn't mean that we do not have a MORAL obligation to enact just laws
and to be committed to regulation that help achieve community and social
justice. But in America that is not the government's job. "IT IS OUR JOB!"
And for any who still have a doubt of that, please re-read the first
three words of the US Constitution. Never give them up!
