It's the health insurance companies' CEO salaries, bureaucracies dedicated to increasing profit margins, profits and the waste of money on advertising that costs so much money.
As a senior, I receive an ad from one or another insurance company wanting me to choose their Medicare plan every single day at this time of year. What a waste. My mother, meanwhile, spends a fortune on generic medications. Cut out the insurance companies and employ all the folks who work for them in other roles in a universal health insurance system and we will all benefit.
I lived in Europe (various countries) for many years during which time I had two young children. The system worked and worked beautifully. I did not have to make an appointment to see the doctor if my children were sick and needed attention right now. My doctor made house calls. I had some very expensive care while I was there. All of it was paid from payroll tax.
Obama's plan stinks. It will never get us anywhere. I like many of Obama's ideas and proposals, but in the area of health care, I disagree with him.
Obama doesn't want to cross the wealthy health insurance companies. Also, I suspect that he does not want to have to argue with the Americans who have been brainwashed to believe that single payer health insurance is a bad idea. He will have to decide whether he wants results or wants to get along with everybody. Don't expect any improvement in healthcare during Obama's presidency. He will do well on energy, but not on healthcare.
