WARNING: This is difficult to watch. It isn't graphic or anything, but very moving. This aired recently in the UK, I believe.

1. Fuck conservatives. Who would want to force someone to live life like that? Evil bastards.

2. I don't know what to say
I've started to post about 10 different things.. Bottom line - people deserve to die a peaceful death and if one chooses that route they should have the choice to do so.

So sad, yet so peaceful.

3. I feel so strongly about this issue.
We treat our pets better than any human who is suffering a horrible disease.

I fully recognize this man's right to end his life this way...

Safe passage to him!

9. 1000% in agreement with you California Peggy - I've said the same before myself...
....we allow a dignified death for our pets - but not for ourselves? For humans?

Makes no sense.

4. So Sad...
I believe that if someone finds themselves in such unbearable pain, a burden on themselves and their families, and death is inevitable anyway, they should be allowed to do what they want.

However, I do not agree with it being televised like they did in the UK in a reality show fashion or something. (Sure, I guess they wanted to get a point out, but still it should be private) I am sure that most would prefer it to be a very private, solemn affair, but their are still some perverted folks out there who would love to get the airing rights of such a thing for ratings.

8. Mr. Ewert's family supported showing this.
Assisted suicide is a hot-button issue in the UK, with people petitioning both the British government and higher European courts for assurance that their families will not be prosecuted for helping them travel to Dignitas. BBC has been doing a pretty good job of covering the issue over the years - if you're interested, start with this link and connect to some of the older articles from the page.

They didn't air this for ratings; it was done to bring the reality of the process into the open - something that I can't see happening in this country.

13. I think someone should ba allowed to committ suicide for any or no reason.
They shouldn't have to explain anything.

5. I think we ALL should be able to decide
when we want to end our lives. Plain and simple.

6. People deserve respect and dignity
In life and death. People deserve to end the suffering on their own in private. Morphine can put you out peacefully. I would hope to have that option.

I am posting, but I have not watched the clip yet. I feel strongly about this issue though.

Kinda ironic that the state can end your life. And they are also the ones that want to prevent you ending your life. :freak:

11. I went to medical school in Munich...
...and financed my studies by taking care of terminally ill patients, two of which had ALS. The individual in the video who claimed that it is not true that these patients suffer a death through suffocation was being disingenuous. Neither of my patients died of suffocation but there was always that fear present when I changed the ventilator tube. Ventilating a patient against his will (as it is done in Bavaria) is a crime. Without it the patient normally just goes to sleep and dies because as the respiratory muscles weaken the CO2 concentration rises. This death is painless. With ventilation, however, this death is no longer possible. Were one to cut off the machine or remove the tubus the patient would suffer from extreme anxiety (extreme anxiety = abject fear) and pain due to the feeling of acute asphyxiation. This was the case with one of my patients whose ordeal went on for 8 years, 5 of which he spent passively staring at the ceiling, unable to communicate (save for blinking his eyes at yes or no questions), being pumped full with happy pills, and more or less being reduced to a biological machine where every body function was controlled from the outside. I was with him his last 3 years and was so relieved for him and his wife when he was finally gone. It is unconscionable to deny a person the right to choose the time of his or her own departure and on a much simpler level, it is no one's business.
