1. My Atheist Perspective
I think this guy is slightly missing the point. I mean he gets its all a bunch of right-wing reactionary bullshit but really do people of other faiths get offended when they see a christmas tree? I can't speak for jews or muslims, but as an atheist my answer is no, I could care less. Business owners should be allowed to decide how best they want to serve their customers and wether they choose decorations representative of one religion or not is ultimately their business. Wether businesses think they would be helped or harmed by their decorations or lack thereof or saying "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays" is entirely up to them and their business strategy, and doesn't reflect some global conspiracy against Christians.

P.S. I like how Richard Dawkins has been agreed upon to be the atheist figurehead.

2. I agree with you as well. This is my first Christmas being an Atheist
and all the religious displays don't bother me EXCEPT when it's on government property. I laugh at the absurdity of it all now. The more Christians protest, the more they show just how weak their faith really is.

And I LOVE RICHARD DAWKINS. I truly do. He's an amazing, brilliant man. I would love to meet him. I just got done reading "The God Delusion" and I'll be starting "The Blind Watchmaker" next, as soon as I am done with 2 other books I am reading. "The Root of All Evil" is an amazing documentary on religion that every one should watch. It scared the hell out of me. I literally could not sleep that night. I'm on his website, richarddawkins.net everyday.

4. I think "Gil" gets it entirely. There are several points . . .
It's inappropriate (destructive really) for government to get mixed up in this, whether it's some microcephalic pol from Utah or Mr. Nice-Guy City Manager from Anytown USA agreeing to the installation of a creche in city hall. Regardless of the influence of religion (more specifically Christianity) on American society, the US is *not* a Christian nation, and bile-spewers like O'Reilly are offending ME when they insist it's so.

Secondly, business owners who decorate their stores get to do so based on whatever criteria they choose. As an atheist, I don't especially care if people say "Merry Christmas" to me -- I mentally translate it into "happy holidays" and get on with my buying-business. I've long since come to peace with the notion that a whole shit-load of people believe in a literal god (or gods), and outside of shaking my head ruefully, it's not worth my time to worry about it.

Only when they try to shove it down my throat does it become an issue. And I define "down my throat" to include insisting that businesses display Christian symbols or be shunned; banning opposing views from the public square when that public square has been given over to religionists to display their views; or telling me my country is "a Christian Nation" (or a Jewish Nation or a Zoroastrian Nation, or Jain Nation or whatever).

THEN I say, "It's a frakkin' secular nation, you god-gasmed moron, and get out of my face with your silly fairy tales." (After which the conversation often goes downhill.)

3. to summarise:
'Christmas died
because THEY tried'
to force the side
that asked 'what right'
have THEY to decide
that Truth is told
only when THEY lied!'
