Dec. 16, 2008: NASA's five THEMIS spacecraft have discovered a breach in Earth's magnetic field ten times larger than anything previously thought to exist. Solar wind can flow in through the opening to "load up" the magnetosphere for powerful geomagnetic storms. But the breach itself is not the biggest surprise. Researchers are even more amazed at the strange and unexpected way it forms, overturning long-held ideas of space physics.

"At first I didn't believe it," says THEMIS project scientist David Sibeck of the Goddard Space Flight Center. "This finding fundamentally alters our understanding of the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction."

The magnetosphere is a bubble of magnetism that surrounds Earth and protects us from solar wind. Exploring the bubble is a key goal of the THEMIS mission, launched in February 2007. The big discovery came on June 3, 2007, when the five probes serendipitously flew through the breach just as it was opening. Onboard sensors recorded a torrent of solar wind particles streaming into the magnetosphere, signaling an event of unexpected size and importance.

"The opening was huge—four times wider than Earth itself," says Wenhui Li, a space physicist at the University of New Hampshire who has been analyzing the data. Li's colleague Jimmy Raeder, also of New Hampshire, says "1027 particles per second were flowing into the magnetosphere—that's a 1 followed by 27 zeros. This kind of influx is an order of magnitude greater than what we thought was possible."

The event began with little warning when a gentle gust of solar wind delivered a bundle of magnetic fields from the Sun to Earth. Like an octopus wrapping its tentacles around a big clam, solar magnetic fields draped themselves around the magnetosphere and cracked it open. The cracking was accomplished by means of a process called "magnetic reconnection." High above Earth's poles, solar and terrestrial magnetic fields linked up (reconnected) to form conduits for solar wind. Conduits over the Arctic and Antarctic quickly expanded; within minutes they overlapped over Earth's equator to create the biggest magnetic breach ever recorded by Earth-orbiting spacecraft.

Lets put it this way Scottie we need more power to the shields
The Earth's shield is WIDE OPEN

1. Is this fear mongering? Would a mass self-fulfilling prophecy lead us to ruin?
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 01:26 AM by trthnd4jstc
I have a hypothesis. I read a secret document about University of Missouri and few other entities, Federal and elsewise. It was several years ago. But I read original reports that say the the petroleum that we are sucking out of the earth, is part of large stack capacitors, with the oil behaving as a dielectric, with the limestone acting as the Cathode. These stack capacitors would naturally lose their voltage potential, I Hypothesize that the earths electromagnetic field may have diminished from our over-exploitation of the planet.

Still, who the F knows. Most of us are too busy trying to hustle our own survivals, that the whole understanding of the universe is left to those who have sufficient knowledge to even talk about it. Basically, a common American would say, "It is over my head.", "You think too much", or some other anti-intellectual slam. Since G-d knows how important being able to think about events, and how to move around the world is to essential to our own survival, we must never think that self-inflicted lobotomy is the way to live our lives. We must chose our destiny, and chose to make things better.

All of this 2012 stuff strikes me as some sort of desire by a group of people, who love to play droning music, interspersed with spacey trip music, soundtracking some powerful idea that should strike inevitable doom in our hearts. I say, forget that, and then I turned this trip off.

We have to find ways to liberate ourselves and others. I have a plan. End money as essential. I have a plan, and I am trying to do it. If we had hundreds of thousands of people trying, G-d knows we can make our world better than it is. My answer is stop controlling Nature. Let the trees and other wildlife grow old. Stop the running amok of Sociopaths. We cannot let murderers control our destiny. We should be the government, and end the government being a paid job.

I would have those of us who are healthy to spend a bit of our time every month, such as 20 Hours a month. In this 20-35 Hours, we could either be working a shift, or coming to work on-call, serving as a fireman, a police officer, a road builder, an electrician, a pipefitter, or what-ever. We do not need money, what we need is food, safety, and hope.

The tyranny of the few over the many must end. We can do it with brotherhood and sisterhood. We can do it with love for our fellow human. We can do it by being nonjudgemental. We can do it by letting people be free, and helping people become free.

Capitalism is evil because it is based on exploitation. Fair Trade is good because it is based on an amicable, and civil trade. One would not want to insult ones livelihood. Capitalism fails the world by creating the self-acceptance of the idea that the world is about taking care of number one. Fair Trade wants to receive something for something. With Capitalism, the acceptance of ideas like "acceptable evil", "survival of the fittest","necessary losses", the elites and upper-class can feel assured that they are right, because they have wealth, thereby self-evident, but I think let us look at the results.

This video I think is like the St. Brigette's videos about 2012. I think that this belief that 2012 is going to be one of death or "cleansing" may be a bit of self-fulfilling prophecy.

What I am getting at is the world sucks because of capitalism, Fair Trade is better, and this 2012 stuff might just be a bunch of He-Haw. And I hope that that is not anyones last name, I am not trying to insult you.

Peace.

4. I have my own theories about 2012...
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 04:25 AM by soulcore
...but there is considerable evidence already out there that out magnetic field IS waning, and perhaps on its way to an all out reversal. And it is true, this change happens about every 250,000 years, and we're about 500,000 years past due.

PSB did a great doc on this called Magnetic Storm, outlining the data, evidence and potential consequences, which you can find more info about here - http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/magnetic/

I highly recommend it.

26. Not a bad idea
To give a little consideration now and again, how you might survive with no electricity whatsoever. No gadges. No digital devices. No power.

How will you keep food cold? Where will you get food? Water? Heat?

6. That theory doesn't wash.
So the Earth didn't have a magnetic field in the Permian, Jurassic, andCretaceous eras, before the great oil deposits were formed?

30. First this is NASA findings Second if you want to see the
Nova PBS pole shift simulation made by the University of Santa Cruz
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/magnetic/reversals.html

http://www.sacbee.com/114/story/1478858.html
The discovery was made last summer by Themis, a fleet of five small NASA satellites.

these finding aren't mayan though the mayans were pretty damn accurate more than we are

this is NASA results and I guess I have to emphasize that there is a BIG HUGE HOLE in the Earths Magnetic field which will allow the solar particles to invade our Earth

Now the Big freakin question is WHY???

31. my question
is- is this something new, or something perfectly ordinary that we have never seen before?

and i don't know what it is exactly that you are referring to that the maya predicted, but since they didn't predict the downfall of their own civilization, i suspect their prognostication abilities.
i'm just a little jarred by the juxtaposition of nasa and edgar casey and the maya.
not trying to be a snot.

32. here maybe this will help

this is from the article

"To the lay person, this may sound like a quibble, but to a space physicist, it is almost seismic," says Sibeck. "When I tell my colleagues, most react with skepticism, as if I'm trying to convince them that the sun rises in the west."

Here is why they can't believe their ears: The solar wind presses against Earth's magnetosphere almost directly above the equator where our planet's magnetic field points north. Suppose a bundle of solar magnetism comes along, and it points north, too. The two fields should reinforce one another, strengthening Earth's magnetic defenses and slamming the door shut on the solar wind. In the language of space physics, a north-pointing solar magnetic field is called a "northern IMF" and it is synonymous with shields up!

"So, you can imagine our surprise when a northern IMF came along and shields went down instead," says Sibeck. "This completely overturns our understanding of things."

13. Edgar Cayce Can Bite Me

Look, celestial events could obliterate us any time. We are always potentially in a fragile position, plain and simple. If an event of such a magnitude were to happen, there probably wouldn't be anything anyone could do about it, unless they owned a space station and a way to get there.

But Edgar Cayce? For Christ's sake, way to sink any possible cred you had going in the first minute and a half of this vid.

Okay, but what does this all mean? North will be South, water in the Northern Hemisphere will circle counter-clockwise instead of clockwise. What will be effected other than compasses?

19. Before the field realigns it fails...
The best analogy I've heard is dropping a rock into some water... The field will wax and wain, and then fail.

Which leaves the Earth unprotected from cosmic radiation. Over the next century or so the field will fluctuate, turn, twist and generally be a bloody mess ... with multiple, roaming North and South poles.

The Aurora would be beautiful I imagine, as the Northern and Souther Lights occur in multiple places simultaneously, while moving with the fluctuating field.

A few hundred years later the field would stabilize, compasses would work once again, and anything that didn't die out gets a second shot at life.

Again, check out the PBS documentary Magnetic Storm, it tells the story better than I ever could.
