'A group of Santa Barbara activists this weekend peacefully exercised their free speech rights to assemble in protest of the roster of speakers at David Horowitz's First Santa Barbara Retreat --at the Four Seasons Biltmore Hotel March 30 -- April 1.
The Montecito Journal described this conference: "what promises to be a dream weekend for conservatives and a nightmarish three days for liberals. . . "
The cost for the three day conference was $1500 per ticket, not including the hotel and amenities.
The speaker lineup included United Nations Ambassador John Bolton, radio talk show host Dennis Prager, David Horowitz, Congressmen Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo (both are likely presidential candidates), former CIA Director James Woolsey, TV military commentator General Thomas McInerney, former Congressmen J.D. Hayworth and Tom DeLay, authors Dick Morris, Victor Davis Hanson, Nonie Darwish, Robert Spencer, and Gordon Cucullu.
The Retreat had a focus on two themes—Political Indoctrination in our Public Schools and Universities; and the War at Home and Abroad. Some of the panel discussions in the three day event include "How Can We Turn the University Around?"; "Jihad Watch -- The Next Moves of Radical Islam"; "How Hollywood Treats the Terrorist Threat"; and "The Media's Responsibility during War".
Protestors were warned to stay off private property by hotel security personnel, and assured Santa Barbara Police that they would do so. One protestor wearing a George Bush mask welcomed passersby to the conference, while others held signs such as "Welcome" "War Criminals Convention", "Honk if you've been subpoenaed." "Neo-con Crime Orgy."
