1. St Louis is the same. School gets cancelled here for
ice. Surprisingly it was not cancelled in the city today even with six inches of snow in some areas.

7. Agreed
and it's a bit of the sign of the times I suppose. I know a lot of suburban districts were called off and my wife's business opened later. Had I been scheduled for work I would have had to been in at the regular time (no snow days in the grocery biz). :hi:

2. President Obama, you're not in Chicago anymore
People like Obama, from states that regularly get a lot of snow and ice, just love to poke fun at us. Mr. President, we don't have the same familiarity and comfort level towards snow and ice because we don't experience it often enough to get used to it. Some people will not handle it well, making them dangerous on the road. Therefore, it makes sense to reduce the number of people on the streets. And that's why our schools get cancelled. We want to keep our kids safe.

3. Lighten up southerners. He's just kidding around.
what's interesting here is that I lived in the DC area back in the early 80s (I've lived in the Chicago area since) and he's 100% right, although I never really understood it because it wasn't like it never snowed in DC. Geographically, DC is closer to the northeastern states than it is to what most people identify with as the "South" (even though it is technically IN the South in that it's below the Mason-Dixon line). In fact, at least back then, I recall us getting 2-3 good snow storms each winter. Nothing like the constant snow you see here in the midwest and seemingly permanent snow cover (especially this year), of course, but it wasn't like Atlanta or Charlotte either.

from New Jersey this morning about why all our school where close today. He called us a bunch of wimps. I told him Texans can't drive when it's rain on the roads and we Dam sure can't drive when it's snow and ice on the road. My evidence, there were 500 accidents just today along.

5. The problem around the DC area is that we don't get enough winter weather
to know how to drive in it. And you have to worry about the other guys on the road. They cancel schools because they don't want the kids waiting at the busstops and have some fool plow into them. Since it is only a few days a year, they cancel school. I brought work home with me yesterday "just in case", and I stayed off the roads today, but I have been working all day. I don't care about snow, but I hate ice. You also have diplomats from Africa and such that have probably never driven in snow.

8. I'm a Sidwell alum, I live in DC & work at a DC public school. Here's the story:
Edited on Thu Jan-29-09 08:35 AM by wordpix
Woke up yesterday to every car in the city (left outdoors)having 1/2 in. of ice encapsulating it. Had to get a sharp tool to get ice out of door cracks just to open car door (10 min.), then defrosting time and ice chipping took another 30 min.

My workplace, a DC public school, opened 2 hr. late and Sidwell could have done same. Even an hour late opening would have been enough.
