1. He was a hero
I'm not at all religious, but, from the first time I heard him, I thought Bill Hicks was a holy man. I'm not even sure of what that means - I just knew it.

Do you know the story of his being bumped from the Letterman show and the stink that followed? You probably do, but, if you don't, John Lahr wrote a perfect piece about it for the New Yorker, based on a very long letter Bill sent him about the experience.

You can read the Lahr article here: http://tinyurl.com/bdlhnf

What was remarkable, though, was that a week or so ago, Letterman had Bill's mother on the show, apologized to her for the whole thing, and the censored clip of Bill performing - the one that the show never aired - was finally shown.

If you're interested, here it is: http://tinyurl.com/b4pbyx

At billhicks.com, there is information about the wildlife preservation fund that was set up in his memory. I made a donation a long time ago, and got back a hand-written note from his mother, with their return address on the envelope, also handwritten. It was one of the most touching things you could imagine. I could feel how much she loved and missed her son. I use that note and envelope as a bookmark, just to remember.

Bill Hicks was a holy man. Thanks for posting this bit..........................

2. Scatological sex fantasies aren't my cuppa
but I know what you mean about him. His later riffs demonstrated that he'd become enlightened somewhere along the line.

That's something he had in common with most of the other greats.

3. Your first three words
suggest that you can see the forest, but not the trees.

I'm sure his memory will survive without your backing.

4. And your post demonstrates
you only read the title line.

Touché.

5. No, you're wrong
I read it.

Redemption is a wonderful thing. Congratulations. But I am hard-pressed to comprehend why the smarmy putdown preceded the announcement of your revelation. That's your business. I have no interest.

Neither, I suspect, would Bill Hicks.

7. Ha! I don't have to watch it. I've heard it before. Great, great, great!
And I searched high and low to post it here. So it finally made it's way to youtube.

One of the most penetrating dialogues I've ever heard. What a picture. Haha.

8. Thank you for this post. Somehow Bill Hicks wasn't on my radar, but I sure got
an education about him tonight by following Tangerine's links and reading up on him with The Google.
I appreciate and Kick this thread

10. He was a voice in the wilderness.
He didn't scream "Make straight the way for the Lord," but his message was just as timeless (and in these times just as necessary).
