I didn't see this posted and think it is a really good video of what happened, where the plane went. It includes talk between pilot and air control. Very wild.

thats neat to see like that...

also, poor birds!

btw, i think the fact the pilot was so cool and calm that made him able to take it down safely... he stayed focused on the situation and didnt let his nerves get the best of him. great pilot.

2. Wow. Was he really landing in the Hudson while the ATC were
still trying to line up a runway for him? Sully sure wasn't chatty in the midst of that crisis. I wonder when he told the passengers "brace for impact."

Amazing.

4. It's not the full audio, or in real time, but still, pretty wild.
I think they were trying to get him to land on land when he went in the Hudson, but am not sure.

5. i think he shut off the radio when he picked the hudson
less distractions. more co-pilot help. that's what i woulda done. and the vid does show the plane slowly sinking. when i first saw it they were on the wing just on the water. brrr.

6. I was wondering if it was edited down for time...
It was a pretty fast version of events in the video.

What he did was still amazing.

I can't believe the conspiracy kooks here who said it wasn't birds at all.

FAA Air Traffic Control communications

Please note that all air traffic communications for LaGuardia tower (LGA), Teterboro tower (TEB), and the New York Tracon (N90) in the time period surrounding the accident are included below. However, most of the communications with the pilot while the aircraft was in the air are contained in the tape and transcript for the New York Tracon. All times are in Zulu time, which is the same as Greenwich Mean Time.

New York Tracon Transcript: http://www.faa.gov/data_statistics/accident_incident/1549/media/Full%20Transcript%20%20L116.pdf
NY tracon audio: http://www.faa.gov/data_statistics/accident_incident/1549/media/N90%20AWE1546%201-15-09%20L116.mp3

From reading the transcript, looking at times, looks like it was about 2 1/2 min from strike to losing air contact. Wild. Just, wild.

9. ATC was doing what it was set up to do. The situation was so extraordinary
the controllers weren't able to wrap their heads around it. They are trained to handle all sorts of emergencies, and as you can hear they are working the emergency in a professional manner, providing the pilot with headings, clearing traffic from the airport runways, looking for alternative airports. I would imagine that in all their training the scenario where an airplane lost all power at such a low altitude was not a high priority, and the idea that a pilot would land on the Hudson was so far out of anyone's experience or even speculation. You can see this in the transcript. The pilot says "We're gonna be in the Hudson" and ATC asks him to repeat the message. The normal response would be to repeat the radio call, "Landing in the Hudson" and perhaps to tell him that local authorities were being notified. It was clear the Hudson call was so unexpected that they didn't know how to react -- it took another airline (Eagle 4718) to pass the word to ATC that Cactus said he was going in the Hudson -- this was 42 seconds after the Cactus captain's call.

The controllers weren't unprofessional, they were just confused; they hadn't faced this situation before. Otherwise, the moment they heard the landing in the Hudson call you'd have heard all kinds of calls to NY authorities.

BTW, if you saw Sully's interview on 60 Minutes Katie Couric tried her damnest to get him to admit to any weakness -- "Were you afraid?" "I pushed those emotions down so I could do what had to be done." "Did you say a prayer?" "I imagine there were 155 people in the back taking care of that." "Did you ever doubt that you could do it?" (He had told her he knew he had to touch down slightly nose up, with the wings absolutely level, at a survivable rate-of-descent, and at minimum controllable airspeed -- and that everything had to happen at the same time.) The Captain looked her in the eye and said, "No, I knew I could do it." No doubts whatsoever.
