Sacramento residents forced out of their homes by the recession are literally pitching their tents across about 40 acres of unused land. The trend has become an alternative to shelters which have run out of beds. (March 10)

1. KnR we have them here also.....was in small numbers but in past 3 years...exponentail
Almost a health hazard.....City and State Perplexed and challenged with dwindling resources....unable to band aid the solution, still using primitive mode.......

5. Whatever that is in Portland looks like the Bellagio Hotel
compared to the primitive set-up in Sacramento, along the river, next to the rats, skunks, fox and mountain lions that roam the parkway. In the summer, the rattlesnakes come out in full force.

I'm quite proud to have been one of Dignity Village's early organizers, was hired by a supporter with $$$ to
draft their by-laws and articles of incorporation with the state and the IRS. Besides being a great ongoing resource for
homeless people who "don't fit" in the shelters for whatever reason, it's also an awesome demonstration that deep-
democracy actually works. It's 100% controlled by community residents, who elect their officers every year.
