75. I do too!
There was also a caller to Stephanie Miller's show this morning who said that he was just back from Iraq and he was so tired of Neocons/RepubliCONS stating that all of the military was RepubliCON as though everyone over there were voting for them,he said that he was a Democrat and so were many of his fellow soldiers, I also salute that caller...

13. The guest did not answer the caller's question as to why he was not in uniform.
I knew someone who dated a guy who worked for C-Span. The guy my friend dated was a rabid right-wing-nutter. And I got the impression from my friend that Brian Lamb, although at one time a Democrat and perhaps still a self-proclaimed Democrat, is also conservative. I suspect that C-Span has a conservative bent. If I'm wrong, please correct me. Since I learned this information from my friend (at least 15 years ago), I have not been a fan of C-Span's programming other than the broadcasts of Congress and other such programs.

tries to be neutral, but that other 50% is like 50 going on 98 to the right.

There is a factor weighing in here. The Republicans have orchestrated domination of the airwaves exquisitely. The have money pouring into think tanks and the mission of the people running and working for those think tanks (plus foundations, private associations/corporations) - is to mold, coach, and create 'guest experts'. They have an expert on everyting and you can be sure you have heard their message time after time. The key winning angle is that all the hosts of GE, Murdoch, Time-Warner, Viacom, Disney, etc - help them come across as the best experts the country has to offer. If people don't bother to learn what their think tank, foundation, lobbying firm, corporations stands for - people are going to buy the hook, line, sinker and that is how them say they vote for Bush and Cheney - especially the elderly who early on in the history of tv could believe more and hear two sides.

It was a complete takeover. A forum like DU educates many, most people only have their tv and paper. And we know where most of those papers and Time/Newsweek mags are coming from.

The Republicans really got it down good. It was a brilliant move to take over and control the news, convert news to entertainment, and it still works for them. There are now many Dems organizations to counter the right, but they don't put themselves out there to get the invitations or they are outright rejected and refused.

For any newcomers who've never heard it said - the funding for c-span comes mostly from those tv networks - the car, celebrity, and pedophile chasing networks owned by war mongering corporations who allow imbedding of every kind.

44. I've always assumed Brian Lamb was a right-wing elitist
As much as anything else, I base this on the way he talked to callers, especially female callers, who were new to the idea of calling in and expressing themselves on television. Brian often cut them off, pressured them to finish, and did everything he could to make them uncomfortable and to communicate the message that "if you're not an insider(especially a male insider) you have no right to be here".

I've also always wondered why C-Span has different numbers for Democrats, Republicans and independents to call in on. What's up with that?

56. Different lines of communication
One must surmise that someone of authority at the C-Span organization finds value in self-categorization. It's kind of creepy.

I'm sure that closet dependents use the independent line all the time. The nerve, eh?

32. Why do people here on DU use words like "pansy" this way?
Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 10:24 PM by tblue37
That is a word used to insult gays and to imply that being gay is something shameful and weak. The first post that used it bothered me, but then there was another and another, and I couldn't help thinking that there seems to be a lot of that sort of thing going on here at DU, where one would like to believe people would be more enlightened.

34. I disagree. Pansy is not a word to insult homosexuals.
Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 09:56 PM by provis99
It is a word used to insult sissies and cowards. At most, one might complain that pansy insults the effeminate, but that's a long ways from saying it insults homosexuals. I think calling your average San Francisco bear a "pansy" just wouldn't work, for example.

39. But "pansy" is used against homosexuals all the time.
That is the traditional use of the word--as an insult to gays. I would rather see these neocon chickenhawks called sissies and cowards. The word "sissy" doesn't inevitably make one think of an insult to gays, since it has been used in so many other contexts to insult people for being weak and cowardly.

71. Yes, but it can't "take the heat".
If you've tried growing them from seed, you'll know that they are very picky about light (or no light) and cool temps.

Pansy isn't necessarily a slur indicating sexual orientation, but rather the lack of a strong constitution.

And a pain in the arse to grow.....

and is traditionally a "gay" insult. But now it is only if you think gays are weak and effeminate. And a "Pansy" certainly puts up with things no jock could withstand. They are indeed hearty!

and we have to hit them everyday we can. I watch 3 or 4 mornings a week and the guest list is sometimes quite unbelievable. I call every chance I get as well. What I'd like to know is who thinks up these awful questions that they ask the callers to answer. Most of the time they are as slanted as a Lou Dobbs poll.

over the right wing pundits manipulating the unstable in this country with this call for an armed revolution against Obama. He mentioned Bachman, Beck, Hannity and Limbaugh and threw Lowry right in with them. He talked about the cops being shot and some other stuff.

He is convinced, as am I, that their goals is to incite some unstable fools into assassinating Obama. That guy called him a traitor about 5 times before the host told him to stop attacking the guest. But to her credit she did let him speak. That was a good rant too.

55. The CSPAN moderator Susan Swain has always been on the up and up.
I have been watching Susan for 20 years and if that had been Brian controlling the phone, that caller would have been interrupted numerous times, told to "get to the point", and then would have had her call terminated after 30 seconds. Susan allowed Mary to go for 1 min 45 seconds without being interrupted and that's more than one can get on the average RW-owned lunatic fringe shows.

58. Give her a break
She started by saying that she was amending her question because of a previous caller's question. Yes she did take a while to get to the question, but the slow delivery helps to make her point stick since it's basically a story. Told slowly, it has more time to be digested, especially by the listening-challenged right-wing.

across.

When dealing with television and time, it's incumbent upon the caller to get to their point quickly so that they are not cut off in the middle of a sentence. That is a fact of life when it comes to dealing with call in programs.

Give ME a break!

52. Lowry and his ilk act like the U.S. government has been innocent thru this world violence
when it's often the cause of it. Our government and intelligence agencies infiltrate other countries, install puppet governments or influence elections, facilitate the extraction of resources from other countries and other activities. Then, this country, through its media, wonders aloud why so many countries or organizations/parties within countries want to take violent action against Americans.

Well geez dumbfucks, let's see...Let's say some foreign military comes into the U.S. and occupies key regions so that they can control strategic resources of this country. How do you think we'd respond?

These neocons need to be stuffed back into their bottle, cork the bottle and send it to some distant galaxy where the chances of their ignorance affecting our world affairs would be near zero.

54. thank you so much Mary
just made my day. Intelligent, polite and dead on! She gave millions a voice. What was the jerk's response? Laughing which was insulting to me and Mary. Dodged her question as to why isn't he in uniform but then we know why don't we. Armchair warriors never
put their money where their mouth is.

57. Good for Mary!
That's the only question the neo-con's should be asked?

You broke America, shut up about "policy" & get out of they way.

Wake up Eric Holden, Justice needs to be restored in America!

66. You make a great point.
With no prosecutions for the crimes of the Bush/Cheney/Neocon cabal we are doomed to having to deal with these idiots in the future. There needs to be an investigation of the run up to the Iraq War. There needs to be jail time for Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Feith/Wolfowitz and the rest of the Nazis. America has a chance at redemption in the eyes of the world right now but we are letting these buffoons control the debate here again instead of righting their crimes. We could be killing two birds with one stone. Investigate and prosecute.

59. That sheepish look on both their faces tells a story in itself. And
there was nothing they could say to counter everything Mary said. Mary had them tied up and on the ropes.

I would like to meet Mary.

I love this lady's honesty and courage. By the way, note the little neo-con turd's supercilious smirk. I see that across the board with neo-con types; Glen Beck seems to be an extreme case. The author of "Bush on the Couch" says that show a lack of feeling for others. That seems to be a requirement to be a charter member of the Conservative movement as it exists today.

76. I would say he's a shade, a millimeter, above the run-of-the-mill neocon
given air time; the reason being that when Mary asked why he hadn't joined the military, he actually stopped smirking and adopted a very serious expression. That shows a teeny and uncharacteristic glimmer of intelligence. Maybe he hasn't reached "rock bottom" yet.

64. Conservatives vs Neo-Conservatives
What always strikes me is that these neo-cons are brought onto talk shows to "balance" the "liberal" view. But they are not conservatives. These are militaristic people who seldom can be found serving in the military, but believe that military action is the right answer to every conflict. As John McCain put it, "Bomb, bomb, bomb..." They are not economically conservative, either, since they obviously don't care how much military action costs us, either in blood or treasure. And they are consistently wrong, wrong, wrong. Many of their recommendations have put us where we are today--in unwinnable wars and in economic trouble.

79. A...yup.
Nothing fiscally conservative about them and their solution to everything is war and privitization of everything.

67. He did say that the Bush approach has not worked
but then went on to say that we might get Iran to back down from their Nuclear program because the current government of Israel is pursuing--the Bush approach!

68. FAIR (From 2005)
http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=2780

I wonder if they've done a study more recently?

" . . Among the most striking findings:

Of the partisan guests, Republicans outnumbered Democrats nearly two to one (134 to 70). Not a single representative of a third party appeared during the study period.

People of color made up only 15 percent of Washington Journal's guestlist (100 out of 663). People of African and Asian heritage accounted for 4 percent each, while those of Middle Eastern and Latin American descent represented 3 percent each. No Native Americans were identifiable during the six months studied.

Male guests outnumbered women by four to one, at 80 percent to 20 percent. Moreover, 69 percent of guests were white males, while just 3 percent were women of color.

Journalists accounted for nearly a third of all guests (32 percent), the largest single occupational group on the guestlist. Of opinion journalists, 32 were right-of-center while only 19 were left-of-center. . . . "

72. Why would anyone watch C-SPAN for anything other than live coverage
of Congress or other "hostless" programming?

Of course, their talk shows are Right Wing. Nearly every bobblehead on talk teevee has a RW agenda. Duh!

80. This is progress. Lowry is on notice as a neocon "used car dealer."
3/4 of the American people stood with Mary, the caller. 73%...hard to ignore...particularly for CSPAN. There will be changes at breakfast. Remember: "First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win." -M.Gandhi
