1. New Jerseyan, here. Supporter of Texas.
As well as every other state in the Union.

Ignore the haters. Some of them just want to stir the pot.

4. Seems to me, if Texas cleaned up its own disgraceful house, it wouldn't enjoy such a reputation
and people wouldn't need to make puppet videos telling others to move out of the country.

LOL at the ridiculous arrogance.

31. Talking about ridiculous arrogance...
Maybe if Democrats from the rest of the US started taking Texas seriously instead of caricaturing it based on a few Republican yahoos than Texans would have some support when corrupt politicos redistrict the state and steal elections.

O wise one, please tell the stupid arrogant Texas Democrats how they're supposed to "clean their own disgraceful house"?

I have far more respect for Texas Democrats in small towns than I do for those in blue states who pat themselves on the back for being born to an area with fewer violent opponents.

Edited on Sat Apr-25-09 04:01 PM by depakid
because it's solidly ingrained in the institutions and culture of the state.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulia,_Texas">Tulia to http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-texas-profiling_wittmar10,0,6051682.story">Tenaha to http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2005/05/medicating-aliah">TMAP, Texas has more than earned its reputation around the country and around the world.

It goes way a few Republican Yahoo's (although it bears mentioning that they're sizable majority), which is why:

The state prosecutes people selling dildo's, promote abstinance only- and has the highest teen pregancy rate.

Why it attracts (and reinforced) fundamentalists- making creationism a perpetual battle in the schools.

Not sure there's a connection, but Texas ranks 50th in the percentage of the population over 25 with a high school diploma, and 47 in SAT scores.

Thanks to "free" market fundamentalism, Texas ranks 2nd in income inequality and 1st in the percentage of people (and children) without health insurance.

The list goes on and on- much of which is compiled in this report:

http://www.borderhealth.org/files/res_880.pdf

That's not even mentioning the criminal "justice" system- nor the draconian attitudes toward crime and punishment that are commonly expressed by it's citizens repeatedly right here on DU.

Yet, from what can be observed- a majority of the state seems to find the state of affairs (which is essentially a third world model) to be acceptible. Not only that, but people like Dick Armey, Charles Hurvitz and many others actively use Texas money to hoist their sorry ideology on other states- though various campaigns and initiatives.

Had to fight those exports myself- along with many other, more times than I can recall.

Would it be GREAT if progressive Texans could manage to make some inroads? OF COURSE. But in the meantime, people around the world are going to see the state exactly and accurrately for how it is.

Texas, as a state- earns its reputation with every new story that comes out, and no amount of flag waving, bravado or chastisement of Texas bashers" is going to change that.

13. Texas is not it's own country....
no matter what some folks might think or say.
And the program that makes the video only has options for 'country languages' - no Texas accent option was available ;(
I know the video is a bit cheesy since it is a lego person, but it was my first attempt at making a video and my first ever to upload to YouTube. It isn't perfect but I am proud that I at least attempted to get a message out :)
Btw, I am a Texan so the video was made in Texas :)

Edited on Sat Apr-25-09 07:07 AM by TheEuclideanOne
I hate it when people tell me to STFU. That is rude and I won't stand for it. If it is directed at other people, well that is quite alright.

Regarding bashing, I live in Florida and if there is one state that is completely deserving of bashing it is my state. I believe that that there is not a single bad thing that happens in the Universe that is not somehow tied to Florida. Florida should secede for no other reason than as one big apology. In fact, if our governor announced that we were seceding, I think that we would get nothing but support, much like a really bad employee who gives their 2 week notice at their job.

I was born in Bryan. My dad and sister were Aggies. My aunts live in Houston.

It's a beautiful state, with many pockets and swaths of dark blue.

I'd been joining in the fun, but your post made me think.

Sorry.

The problem is that in Texas they hold so many elected offices. But no state is clean, hell here in Minnesota we have Michelle Bachman. And we were the only state with the cajones to vote against "Morning in America".

I am not sure which one is more fun to watch: Bachmann or Palin.
As far as Texas though, I have a pretty good feeling that Gov. Perry will be in the unemployment line soon :)

They are such poor losers they still haven't gotten over it.

Personally, I'm truly fond of those Texans who believe that secession won't cause an increase in their taxes. The Texas legislature is, I believe, only part-time now?

Think about it: Little if any business or environmental regulation, carry your guns around wherever you want to and charge little to nothing for wages. They'll love it! That's until one of their friends gets a boo boo and they call crying to mommy on how they want to go home.

Besides that's what the most popular move is for leaders of a secessionist movement, head off to a country that will put up with illegal antics.

I'd would say Alaska, but from the looks of it Failin Palin could be ousted within a year and a half.

26. Secession was illegal in 1860 too.
The majority of Republicans in Texas advocate secession, and they're in control of the state. If pointing out the obvious stupidity and illegality of it is "bashing", and you don't like it - then take your damn state back.

Until then, trying to get people to stop voicing their opinions is a little thin-skinned and shows a real un-Texan concern for other people's opinion.

30. Dear Baldguy
You are correct, pointing out the obvious stupidity and illegality of it is NOT bashing.
But the majority of hateful comments that have been rampant all over the internet in the past week at websites like DU and HuffPo is.
I am referring to the type of comments that people leave such as: Don't let the door hit you in the a$$, put up a fence around Texas, give Texas back to Mexico, we don't need Texas please go!, and many other kinds that entail name calling that I won't repeat here, etc.

I am not trying to stop people from voicing their opinions, I was trying to get people to stop the 'hate-mongering' and to be more positive and united in our struggle to turn Texas blue.

35. Apparently....
much more work needs to be done in order to help the Texas Democrats and Americans that live in Texas.
Every time an article is posted on HuffPo regarding Texas or Perry there are 100's of people that are still bashing Texas and telling us to get the F&*# Out of the USA!
It's like there is a mob out there with torches and pitchforks running around crazy without a brain in their heads!
This is no way to unite the people and to help turn Texas bluer than it has already become since the last election.
I am really sad and disappointed ;(
