CBS News Interactive: Sept. 11 And Since
NEW YORK (CBS) ―

An administration official says a presidential Boeing 747 and a fighter jet flew low near ground zero in New York City Monday because the White House Military Office wanted to update its file photo of the president's plane near the Statue of Liberty.

White House military office director Louis Caldera says federal officials notified local and state authorities in New York and New Jersey, but he also apologized in a statement on Monday for the confusion and disruption.

1. And here, New Yorkers don't Panic with the jets.
Because at 10:00 am, Battery Park is filled with tourists.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAHqAzCrFfY

And where are they running. How stupid, this whole thing.

As I scan the YouTubes on the subject, most are by Obama Haters.

Pretty telling, I'd say.

This is a non-story, a nothing event.

New Yorkers aren't like that.

2. What a completely idiotic statement.
How dare you say that a New Yorker would not attempt to save his own life? HOW DARE YOU? People ran down thirty flights of stairs because they saw that plane in our sky. Because they hadn't known what to do the last time but they did this time.

NON-EVENT???? You have the empathic capacity of a dead worm.

3. Thank you. How dare I, really. A jet flew low, running wouldn't save your life.
I've been through more hell than I care to describe and I see those who are calm about it and those who panic.

Most people don't panic.

911 was a crisis. This was a low flying plane.

Anyone who flew down 30 flights of stairs was in a state of panic.

Calling me idiotic is a similar reaction.

We disagree. I don't know of anyone who reacted that way. It was startling, yes, but running around, down stairs?

I'm sorry for those in that state of shock, but it doesn't mean those less shaky need to also be panicky.

And, the MSM made this more a thing than it needed to be.

New Yorkers, most of us, are not freaked out by this.

5. I agree, the people that panicked are useless in a real emergency
They can't think straight, and half the brain is shut down dealing with the fight or flight reaction.

A similar reaction happens in Kayaking, which depends on control in chaotic, terrifying river conditions. It can get so wild, certain people will freeze at the magnitude of the experience. They sit in the boat, paddle held out in front of them, bracing on air, instead of the water that would give them control.

The people running nowhere are doing the equivalent of an air brace just before they are swept into a random hazard that just happens to be in their way.

Of course, there are certain physical laws of nature that dictate that a plane that high could not possibly affect them without performing a very extreme maneuver, but I guess they don't teach physics, deistnce estimation, Math or trigonometry as it applies to the real world any more. If more people would learn the laws of physics that have been on the books for centuries, maybee they'ed question why the collapse of the WTC 1,2, and 7 was so significant, considering that they fell as if there were no obstructions under them as they fell. It was freefall, like dropping an 8 ball from the top of the empire state building.

But no, many will just cover their ears, and put on the blindfolds and take the government explanation/myth on faith and leave it at that, because if they actually allowed themselves to see the reality, their lives would be part of the big fraud that they choose to remain happily unaware.

To even float this idea to some people, is like blaspheming the lord and they will happily sentance one to a stoning, without ever considering the voluminous evidence.

4. Well...
Caldera did tell local and state authorities in New York and New Jersey, so in my opinion if Bloomberg is going to be upset he should be upset with his own people that did not tell him.

Out of curiosity, did people panic and run when Captain Sulley flew in and landed in the Hudson?

7. One thing
One thing that bugs me about events like this these days is a bunch of politicos, in this case Republicans, looking to use it for political gain and in the process calling for Calderas resignation. Was this the best decision he could have maybe? No, it robably wasn't a great decision. Did he let the proper authorities know what was going to happen? Yes he did. I believe there is some kind of rule that they never let people know where Air Force One (since the President wasn't on board I think technically at that point it is not Air Force 1) is at any given time because of security concerns. So the Republicans are willing to ruin a persons career for simply not anticipating that some people in Manhattan would panic on seeing a low flying 747 overhead. Should he be reprimanded? Of course he should, but I think calling for his resignation is way over the top.

Republican/Conservatives better realize real soon that running out their 'fake outrage' every time they see something that might give them some small amount of political advantage is wearing real thin. I think most of the American people have come to understand the machinations of the Conservative echo chamber and are tired of it and have for the most part tuned it out. If the Republicans don't get serious about doing the peoples work instead of constantly playing politics their party may doomed to the same fate as the lowly Dodo bird.

9. since I don't live there
I can't have a first hand opinion. The New York Post reported Bloomberg as "furious" that he wasn't told. That might suggest that he got more than a few calls to his office that day from upset or angry New Yorkers. No panicked ones. Although there were reports of those who were concerned and correctly so I believe.

Dominick Caglioti, who works at the Mercantile Exchange, thought the worst as he saw the jets hurtle toward his window just after 10:30 a.m.

Thousands flooded the streets downtown as buildings called evacuations.

"There is situation outside. We don't have any further information," went one announcement at the Embassy Suites downtown.

After hearing it was all planned, many of those in the streets complained New Yorkers should have been warned.

"You don't do this to people down here after all we have been to," said Jillian Pizzarello, who also works at the Mercantile Exchange.

I would imagine that many didn't notice it but for the ones that did their reaction would be no different from my own.
