1. Amazingly Offensive
but that hasn't changed in 50 years, either.

2. Isn't this anti-Communist propaganda?
I can see where it might apply to the loss of our civil liberties, but I don't care for where it's coming from.

3. exactly
it makes a couple of good points, but it's pretty much pro-capitalist propaganda.

Not that the USSR was any kind of paradise, and I understand the Cold War context, but the loss of civil liberties today is primarily coming from right-wing, corporate supported factions, not leftists

4. That is right.
This was the kind of film short kids were shown in school during the 60's.

11. Yes. Funny, when they drank the "ism" the same thing has been happening in America since the 80's
The cartoon is correct except for one thing; it fails to recognize American CapitalISM as an ism. It was pure propaganda for small government, "free" markets, and big business. What people don't realize is that when you take power away from the government you give it to the private sector. Big business and corporate america can be just as oppressive as a fascist or communist government. This cartoon recognizes what too much power can, will, and does commit; it just exonerates capitalism making it look more innocent; when its not.

8. Propaganda
Edited on Sun May-10-09 03:24 PM by RandomThoughts
I started to point out the one sided arguments in the cartoon. But they are too many to go through.

This blind look at capitalism spun the defense of one system without realizing that system has flaws that can be moderated. and incorporating those views has led many over the last years to the blind following of ideology without thinking about what it really means.

If you do not believe it is propaganda, notice that the capitalist at first were shown to be embarrassed to be called capitalist, then the narrator said don't be embarrassed. In the last 40 years, after the success of this kind of propaganda, can you think of anyone in popular society that would have been embarrassed to be called a capitalist? In 1950s it seemed many thought being a capitalist might be a bad thing... Wonder how that changed...

Note that the outing of actions that have been taking place is starting to reveal some of the truths of the limitations of pure capitalism. But we knew those limitations in the 1930s we just ignored them because of ideology.

12. Class Warfare Would Be An Improvement
What we are seeing now is class genocide. There is nothing radical about defending oneself.

13. It does point out that the framework used to control the masses hasn't changed much.
Hyperbole and fear-baiting have been employed in this country for decades. People just seem to have this 'It can't happen here.' attitude.

It most certainly can, and has been happening for a long time.

14. What was the crap about "Government regulation is responsible
for sending jobs overseas"? Bullshit. It was the abandonment of regulation that has allowed corporations to exploit tax loopholes and cheap labor to increase their grotesque levels of profit.
