1. Very informative clip on single payer.
No wonder the insurance companies don't want single-payer. Single-payer is a much better deal for Americans. Single-payer is much more affordable.

3. Wow - very informative. I especially took note of the fact that we
probably would not spend any more public funds on single payer than we are spending now - based on the chart they showed. Thanks so much for posting this. Getting single payer has become a passion with me. Glad to see you in the fight to. Good luck.

6. One thing this video doesn't take into account...
Health care costs more in this country because the overhead is higher. Doctors have to pay often six figure malpractice insurance premiums. Why? Because we are the most litigious country in the world. We have more lawyers per capita than any other country, and they have to keep themselves working, don't they?

Every time somebody in this country gets a hangnail they are looking for someone to sue. Personal injury lawyers offer to take the case with no charge unless they win (no risk to the litigant)(this is illegal in all other 1st world countries). Since 99% of the people/ entities they sue are insured, it is actually the insurance company rather than the defendant who is being sued. Since the insurance company has to pay lawyers too- so even when it is a case they could win, it is often more economical to settle out of court, and just pay the litigant. (e.g. Pay the litigant $100,000 VS $400,000 in legal fees to win the case in court) They cover this cost by raising premiums. In addition, doctors and hospitals are forced to run many more tests and have much more monitoring equipment per patient, just to cover themselves against lawsuits- further increasing costs.

Until the legal system is reformed it is unlikely we can get our healthcare cost structure in line with other industrial countries.

7. very true
this issue would definitely need to be addressed, as well as how to reintegrate unemployed medical insurance company workers into the work force.

thanks for the info.

8. I'm going to point out, one more time..........
Edited on Thu May-21-09 01:36 PM by PDJane
That the reason for the huge amounts in litigation is that the litigation has to pay for health care for the rest of the life of the litigant. Canada does NOT grant those huge amounts in litigation, unless there are extraordinary circumstance, because we don't deny health insurance to the litigant. The litigant can't get health care stateside after an accident; no insurance company will touch him/her because of pre-existing conditions, and there is a lifetime limit on insurance, which is the reason for the litigation in the first place.

It's a stupid system, it leaves people without enough health care at any point, and it benefits only the lawyers and the insurance companies. The government even gets hammered, because medicare only covers the poor, the elderly and the disabled...which means that the pool of people isn't spread out, it just takes the most expensive to cover out of the taxpayer's pocket.

9. Doctors have to pay six figure malpractice insurance premiums,
because of the often long-term effects of their occasional incompetence. Many patients lose their ability to work, or worse, live with a lifetime of pain and suffering, social stigma, etc, that can result from their errors.

Or what about patients that die as the result of negligence? Like my dad used to say, "At least I don't bury my mistakes."
How many people have lost friends and loved ones due to negligence? They may not even know it.

True, like any system there are those scumbags that take advantage and make it harder for legitimate cases to be dealt with. But it is a drop in the bucket, not something that stands out as a serious factor in health care costs.
