A year ago I asked Canadians if they would switch Healthcare models with the US. After 37,000 views and more than 1,000 responses later, here is what I learned. . .

2. Thanks Britethorn.
I'm posting a link to this in our new Single Payer Health Forum. When I worked as a campground host up by the Canadian border we had a lot of Canadian campers. I often discussed health care with them and they pretty much used to tell me the same thing, especially after I explained our system to them.

3. Canadians
I've worked with quite a few Canadians over the years (including my boss) and I've never heard them say anything but nice things about the Canadian system. They're really proud of it and really happy with it and it drives them crazy when they hear Americans denigrate it without knowing anything about it.

Thanks for linking and watching!

6. I'm an American citizen, but half of my family is Canadian
From my experience with my relatives, I can tell you two things

  1. Canadians are "nice." They are generally low-key, and they don't tend to brag.
  2. About the only thing my relatives do brag about is their health care system. They love it. And they're justifiably proud of it.

If you want to see a passionate Canadian, talk health care. Or hockey.

10. Yup, I'm Canadian
and grateful every day for our health care system. For profit insurance companies are out and out evil, far as I'm concerned. Get rid of them!

12. Hi irislake, I'm from Hamilton, Ont, where are you posting from? Also, here's what Obama should do..
He should have his team produce an informational video about free healthcare and use Canada as an example. He should attack every single right wing talking point and explain IN DETAIL the difference between SOCIALISED healthcare and COMMUNISM just so the fuckin morans don't have any talking points to turn to. This should be broadcast on every channel and played in every school across the country. Finally, he should make it CLEAR that anyone who argues with these points cares more about money then the health of their fellow human beings.

That would just about destroy the right and their fucking bullshit.

5. Too many Americans have a superiority complex about everything they're associated with.
We have the best health care system. The best schools. The best military. The safest and most abundant supply of food. The best standard of living. They think all of these things without actually comparing how these things operate in other countries. Just because it's in the USA, it's gotta be the best.

It's that arrogance that compels radicals to slam planes into our buildings, not "hating us for our freedoms" like a former douchebag president once said.

7. Their nursing home situation is much better than ours.
Edited on Tue Jun-09-09 06:08 PM by proReality
The ailing father of one of my Canadian friend's did have to wait to get into a nursing home--for an entire three weeks! Until there was an opening in the nursing home the man was placed in an interim facility, with round the clock nursing staff.

Here it can take a year or more before a name comes to the top of a waiting list. And until there is room in a nursing home the ailing elderly have to remain at home with whatever care is available (it happened to my mother).

We were able to get home health care twice a week, and then only for an hour each of those days. A visiting nurse came twice a month to check on my mother, but if anything was seriously wrong we had to call an ambulance and take her to the hospital. Co-pays and deductibles were very expensive the five times that happened.

By the time there was finally room for her, we had to get her on Medicaid to help pay the nearly $5K plus monthly bill. Don't even get me started on what Hell it is to deal with Medicaid...it ended up with us having to hire an attorney to sort out the mess Medicaid created when, after a year in the home, they said she no longer qualified and stopped paying the nursing home bills.

After seriously injuring my back and gaining a hernia from lifting her to change and bathe during the 13 months before she was able to be moved into a home, you can give me a "socialist" state any day of the week! The alleviation of mental stress alone is worth paying a few extra dollars in taxes.

15. I thought the Canadian system didn't cover long-term care?
Does it vary from province to province?

11. I'm an American who lived in Canada and I thought the system was great
As stated, the best part was that you didn't worry about what would happen if you got sick.
If you lost your job, you didn't worry about what would happen if you got sick.
If you got sick, you didn't worry that you might be dropped from your insurance.

The system in Canada isn't perfect, but Canadians would never, and I mean never,
consider abandoning it for the system that we have in the US, and I speak from experience.

18. And that's exactly it
In Canada (and every other 1st world country in the world), if you get sick you go to the doctor. Cost is not an issue. That is what the government is for!! Michael Moore made the most apt comparison -- do we consider cost if our house is burning down and we call the fire department? No, of course not. This is life and death, the government takes care of you. Why not when one is having a heart attack or is in pain or needs PREVENTATIVE health care?? It is sooo simple to me...I've said this on these forums before. I know a LOT about health care systems as I am a medical student and am interested in the administrative side of medicine as well, and although the Canadian system has some problems, NO ONE is left out in the cold to die of cancer because they cannot afford a year of chemo (which by the way could cost hundreds of thousdands of dollars). I believe the health care system in the United States is the biggest sham there is -- it keeps you poor, sick, and afraid.
