Summary: Cenk plays and breaks down a clip from Bill Maher's appearance on Countdown with Keith Olbermann where Maher argues that Obama needs to adopt some of Bush's attitude to drive through *good* legislation that he was elected to push through. Cenk basically agrees and gives a nuanced 3 step explanation as to why and how it can be done.

22. "enlighten us, please" -he/she will not be able to, you can count on that.
I'm still glad I voted for Obama but there's a time when people need to look beyond the honeymoon and talking points. People like "Greentea" have not done this yet.

5. For months all I heard was people whining Obama was "just like bush"
Didn't close Gitmo
Supported warrantless wiretapping
Didn't repeal Patriot Act
Didn't end DADT/DOMA
Escalated troop levels in Afghanistan
No "transparency"

He was just like bush. He should be "less like bush".

Now some "comedian" comes out and says Obama should be "more like bush" and everybody jumps backwards through their asshole to agree with him.

Make up your frickin mind. Do you want him to be more or less like bush?

8. Wrong list
It's like when you go to Home Depot, but you pick up the grocery list; they don't have milk and eggs at Home Depot. Barack picked up the wrong list when he went to the "I'm gonna do like Bush" jobs.

9. So do you want him to be more like bush or not?
And if "more", how should he do this?

Maybe he could run and hide like a scared rabbit on 9/11?

Put on a flight suit, stuff a sock in his shorts and prance around the deck of an aircraft carrier screeching "mission accomplished".

Buy a pig farm and go hide on it for half of his term?

Let his vice president tell him when to get up, eat, sleep and wipe his ass?

Nah, I don't buy it. You don't really want him to be like bush.

12. Exactly how Bill Maher said
Call his win a mandate and shove some of what he promised on the campaign trail through.

17. This is a straw-man because no one is arguing for these things.
Bill's point is simply that Obama should be more forceful in advocating certain positions and applying pressure to Congress. That's it, nothing more, nothing less.

PS---Obama apologists should be happy that some on the left are constructively criticizing him (I realize some believe ANY criticism is non-constructive which is BS). After all, it actually *helps* Obama because it makes him appear more post-partisan.

23. "I realize some believe ANY criticism is non-constructive which is BS" -BINGO
It's like Maher said in one of his episodes a few weeks ago "We need to be loyal to PRINCIPLES, not people" I used to be one of those people that thought criticism of Obama just helps the right-wing but when the criticism is of a right-wing ideal being put into play by a so-called left-wing president, it is constructive in every way.

21. Bro, you are STILL missing the point!
Edited on Thu Jun-18-09 06:18 PM by Liberal_Christian
No one is arguing with you that Obama isn't like Bush in what he wants to do for this country.

Let me try to kind of spell out what everyone's trying to tell you:

Bush -TERRIBLE ideology
-Pushed his voting base's legislation w/REPUBLICAN majority in congress

Obama -GREAT ideology
-NOT pushing his voting base's legislation w/DEMOCRATIC majority in congress

Let me ask you something:

-Do you like healthcare that's still completely profit-driven and privatized?
-Do you like how the financial "regulations" that got us into this mess have been left untouched and unturned?
-(you hate the Bush admin, and rightly so) do you like how the Bush admin is going unanswered for their crimes?

If you are a true democrat and/or liberal, your answer to all of the above should be NO. You couldn't tell by all of the brainless right-wing rhetoric but true republicans and/or conservatives are loving the fact that Obama is pussy-footing these issues. They LOVE privatized medicine and a lawless "free market" economy.

7. In the sense of continually pushing for his agenda, yes. Definitely.
It's very important, though, that Obama have a different agenda than Bush.

Very important.

And not at all clear at this point.

10. Hate to say it, but the reason that "pork" is such an entrenched tradition
is that it is the easiest way to pay members of Congress back for their support. It's leverage.

26. Sure Talks For Me!!! There Are Times & There Are Times... I Just Haven't
seen Obama have too many "times" when he's using THE BULLY PULPIT! No need to be down & dirty like BFEE, but Obama has that certain "class" about him, and he's good at selling when he wants to.

Just makes me wonder how much he wants to! I realize he was dealt a HUMONGOUS hand, but he wanted to become POTUS and I'm sure he knew it wasn't going to be a cake walk. Millions of people voted for him because he offered CHANGE and he must know he needs to PUSH BACK to make it happen! I worked my butt off by selling him as a candidate who would make a DIFFERENCE... Maher & Cenk are CORRECT as I see it
