41. Michael Jacksons actions
settling a civil suit out of court for 22 million dollars might as well be an admission of guilt. The innocent don't settle, they fight the charge. In a society that deems sex offenders as the lowest of the low, the mixed message of the deification of Michael Jackson is pretty disgusting.

those who have been victimized don't take cash to shut up the truth? See, it's a two way street. You don't know the truth, and neither do I, but we shouldn't demonize someone that has never been convicted, and has been cleared once, and has also gave and will give altogether a half billion over time, to charities. We can say he was weird or unique, but to say he definitely did what he was accused is judgment, and I'm not willing to go there, especially with the fact that some took cash to settle - and if I was a parent and certain someone molested my child based on their telling me so, I would not take hush money.

This 'deification' you speak of - that's just your getting upset that he was simply loved. There's just not enough love in the world.

best,
Divine Discontent

56. I probably shouldn't have said he was "probably guilty"
Edited on Tue Jul-07-09 05:30 PM by spiritual_gunfighter
I take that back, he may have been totally innocent, you are right I don't know. But what I do know is that a man was facing a civil law suit and instead of having the opprutunity to clear his name which had been dragged through the mud, he chose to settle it out of court and insured that questions would dog him until the day he died. The allegations of child molestation are never far away from the conversation about Michael Jackson, and I personally think had Jackson went to trial in the civil suit and won, the discussion would have ended. He chose not to do that, for reasons like you said we will never know for sure. But I will stick to my previous statement, people accused of child molestation that are innocent fight it with everything they got. The Martin Basheer documentary is very telling, when asked by Basheer about the settlement Jackson looked at the floor and said and I am paraphrasing "I couldn't go through with that". Really? You couldn't go through something like a civil case that would have cleared your name forever? You are right Jackson was found not guilty in a court of law and we all have to respect that, but so was O.J. Simpson and Robert Blake. The California judicial systems track record on convicting high profile defendents leaves much to be desired. Do we all accept that OJ didn't kill his ex-wife and Ronald Goldman because he was found not guilty in a court of law? When OJ finally dies are we all going to celebrate OJ's amazing pro and college football career or are we going to call him a murderer that beat the rap?

"This deification you speak of- that's just your getting upset that he was simply loved. There's just not enough love in the world".

Uh, thanks for the Hallmark card response, but you are right there isn't enough love in the world, but do we really want to use Michael Jackson as a vessel of that love? Or do we want to examine our own reaction to the death of a man that may have been important in the shaping of popular culture in the 1980's, but beyond that a guy that when he had the chance to show the world he was an innocent man chose not to. His fate was put in the hands of a California jury against his will and he beat it, but then why are we still wondering if he really did it?

57. was it Hallmark or DOn Henley? ha... I actually quit wondering about him last year
I figured it wasn't my business, and all these people kept being around him, he never was convicted, so why be too concerned since my kids would never be overnight with him (like any parent should leave their kid overnight with another non-family adult). He seemed like he really was sweet, gave tremendously to the world, his daughter at least adored him, so I leave it to God. But yes, we should move on from this put him back down to Elvis level, and not some sort of 24/7 news situation - he will always be in the news from time to time, but the nonstop cycle will and should end this weekend.

I object to your objection.

If you don't want to listen or watch, change the channel. It's that simple. There are tons of shows and nonsense I really don't care about, specifically here on DU, but I don't go spam the threads.

So if you're sick of it all, turn the channel. Tune it out. It isn't that hard.

This time next week, no one will be talking about Michael Jackson anymore and we can all get back to attacking Pres. Obama.

But for now, millions of people are mourning someone who played a very deep role in their lives.

Maybe you can't respect that, but don't fucking come in here pissing on it because you're annoyed.

with all the craziness going on right now in America and around the world, the so called "News Media" thinks this deserves round the clock coverage?
This is tabloid news, like the msm says its a hot story, that admission alone should tell you about who is delivering your news over the television (Rating Whores).
Look i bought Thriller the day it came out & i had a red leather jacket to boot and im not just saying that for dramatics here i was a big fan when i was younger.
Everyone knows he has died and have had plenty of time to let it sink in, if stations such as MTV and such wish to carry this i can understand but as a news organization doing this at a time when such crucial questions need answering and questioning this is what we get.
Its O.J And Anna all over again, no im not comparing the personalities or their star quality merely just the MSM's starvation for ratings instead of informing.

42. then good heavens don't insult that intelligence you have by watching ANY of it if it
truly insults you, is that SO hard? You choose to watch it, split seconds of seeing it on TV don't count - you choose to sit and watch, choose to comment on it, choose to let it "insult" you.

If you did watch the entire service, it was very tasteful, heartwarming for the human condition as ALL inspiring artists can do for mankind, and his child speaking at the end saying he was the best daddy her entire life was beautiful as were speeches by Al Sharpton and amazingly, Brooke Shields.

And NO it's not "OJ" all over again - which is ridiculous to compare it to, it's the memorial for the world's most celebrated musician - you need to get over yourself and those pissed off by the coverage - no one is making YOU choose to watch, comment, etc. Just turn it OFF. Read a book!

Jackson is almost being canonized. All I see is that he is pissing away money as quickly dead as he did alive. Somebody please point out all the wonderful things this guy did with his money?
What great projects did he work on? How did he help people?

Sure he had some talent but much of that was used up years ago. He was a sick person and if not a pedophile, he definitely had strange ideas of what constituted a proper relationship with young boys.

Al Sharpton wants a national day of mourning and a stamp issued under the same exception used for dead presidents. Is he insane?

Put this man and his obscene coffin in the ground.

that is respectable, he also settled a civil suit for child molestation to the tune of 20 million dollars. The child in question gave testimony to the LAPD detectives that described Jackson's genitals and they matched the photos that were taken by the police. The child in question was a cancer survivor. The deification of Jackson is disgusting on so many levels. He was an amazing artist and contributed more to popular culture in the 1980's than anyone and that should be celebrated, but the man was a troubled soul that most likely was a child molester. If you want to celebrate him feel free. I will choose not to.

Did more for helping make this a better world than all of the people on DU together and most of those in Congress. Gave over $300M during his life to charity to help feed the hungry, build hospital units, fund orphanges, fight AIDS/HIV in Africa, and more.

And all that a select few morons here on DU (and at least one member of Congress) can spew is vitriol, ignorance and unfounded accusations.

50. A few of his contributions to our world
Edited on Tue Jul-07-09 05:16 PM by Tx4obama
We are the World raised over $63 million for famine relief.
From Wikipedia:
"We Are the World" is a 1985 song written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, produced and conducted by Bruce Springsteen and Quincy Jones and recorded by a supergroup of 45 popular musicians billed as USA for Africa (United Support of Artists for Africa).<1> The charity single was intended to raise funds to help famine-relief efforts in Ethiopia, which had experienced unusual drought and political instability in 1984/1985.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_are_the_world

After the "Heal the World" song/video Michael started the Heal the World Foundation, a charitable organization which was designed to improve the lives of children. The organization was also meant to teach children how to help others.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heal_The_World

The Heal the World Foundation is a charitable organization founded by entertainer Michael Jackson in 1992. The foundation's creation was inspired by his charitable single of the same name. Through his foundation, Jackson airlifted 46 tons of supplies to Sarajevo, instituted drug and alcohol abuse education and donated millions of dollars to less fortunate children, including the full payment of a Hungarian child's liver transplant.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heal_the_World_Foundation

"Earth Song" was Jackson's first song/video that overtly dealt with the environment and animal welfare.

46. Waste of everyone's time......
Look...I think MJ was a very talented musician and entertainer. He was a businessman that lost his way with an extravagant lifestyle that was plagued with many personal challenges. He died too young and it would have been a triumph for him to make a solid comeback and kept himself on track to avoid the problems that plagued him.

But this circus must come to an end. If any tv station is still running this 24 x 7 tomorrow they will be permanently removed from my channel line up and that includes CNN and MSNBC. Jackson did not, despite what some may believe, walk on water, cure cancer, end world poverty, restore climate balance, etc. He was a man who likely died from abuse of prescription medications.

Let's get him planted and move on.

60. DU is more than just 'politics' it is world conscious - "earth song" "heal the world" etc, and the $
he has raised for charities to save our planet are worthy of the attention he's given. Your request is gladly granted, if you cannot see the facts and understand how this is something that effected millions of people he has helped in the world who don't even know who helped them, then you are lost, not anyone paying attention to his memorial.
