They are being protested by people in the community.

"One North Central Florida neighborhood is in an uproar over a sign that's posted along the street. They say it's a sign of hate."

Crowd gathers in protest in front of church

Residents carried their own signs Wednesday evening calling for "peace not hate" in response to a northwest Gainesville church that recently posted a sign with an anti-Islamic message.

At least 80 people gathered on both sides of Northwest 37th Street in front of the Dove World Outreach Center for a prayer vigil organized after the church recently erected a sign proclaiming "Islam is of the devil."

Participants held up their signs and listened to words from Eve MacMaster, pastor of the Emmanuel Mennonite Church, and Saeed R. Kahn, president of the Muslim Association of North Central Florida. The group maintained its vigil for at least an hour as members at the church gathered for a 7 p.m. service.

After learning about the church's red-lettered sign, MacMaster used e-mail to let others in the community know about the vigil.

"We're here to stand in solidarity with our Muslim neighbors," MacMaster said. The purpose of the vigil, she said, was express the goodwill of most citizens and religious people toward Muslims and to "pray for the cleansing of the community."

That is great to see them protesting that sign. The pastor sounds so full of hate and won't take the sign down.

Ybor City Stogie has a video up from CNN

The pastor is going to put out signs on abortion and same-sex marriage.

I found this post at a blog. The women who posted it approves of the sign, but it was good to see some of the others calling her posts dangerous.

Talk Gainesville Moms

Here is one of the comments criticizing the poster.

"Wow, I'm not really sure how to respond to this. I am offended. I am outraged. I am very uncomfortable with the message that you're sending on this forum. This IS a message of hate, and I am saddened by this act in what I generally consider to be a very tolerant town. I know that you will not likely reconsider your opinions on this matter, but I hope that others will not accept the intolerance for others that you show here."

More from the comments.

....."Now - I will give you some truth - so hold on to yourself and try not to be offended. I'm taking up your challenge to be bold and speak the truth.

You have not been a member of our online community. You joined two days ago in order to spread your hate. I do not like that you joined our friendly and supportive forum to spew your hateful message. Go away. This forum is not the place for this. Take it somewhere else. Find the proper place for it. It is not here. Stop trying to hijack our forum.

To all members: Sorry if this is too harsh. I've never posted a negative message before. But I just am so offended that someone would sign up for our community just to pursue this agenda.

A relief to see these. Another:

I am Sickened by this posting and the sign.
I agree with the other *members posts and Jensen thank you, in no way am I, as a member appauled at what you have said, I applaud it.

As a Christian, you are to be like Jesus, Jesus would never instill fear into a community like this. If your church really wanted to open communication with other religions why didn't your pastor just visit those other places and invite those others to your facility? Was it really necessary to voice out something so hateful? From my studies it doesn't sound like your preacher has any knowledge of Islam, he is only telling you what is made to be stereotypical and wrong.
Your church is wrong in what it did and what it is doing to our community.
May God Bless you Amy and I hope God reveals to you a kinder way to spread your message.

Good for those commenters.

1. The economic contraction drives donation-starved pastors to offensive stunts.
Publicity is worth controversy if the dollar intake gets ratcheted up.

2. I'm glad the community is speaking out

My daughter has a friend who is Muslim (we are Jewish). She was over for dinner on Saturday & told us that a lot of the kids at school called her a terrorist & teased her and her brother. She is Moroccan and does not wear a headscarf. I asked her if she had told anyone in the school administration &she said there was no point because the kids don't listen anyway. A few weeks ago, my daughter & I were at her orientation @tulane university. They had a program for the parents on religious life @ Tulane. So the Rabbis spoke, and a priest spoke and a Christian club kid spoke &a Presbyterian minister spoke. Afterward, I was outside with one of the other parents speaking to the minister. He asked me if my daughter would join their group. & I said no, we're Jewish. Then he said "I have great respect for the Jewish people. Our Lord was a Jew. I can't say the same for Islam. Allah is not the same God I worship. I could not believe that he would think it was ok to say something like that to a total stranger in a setting like that. Now I'm wondering if I should say something to the school, because I hope they would not find that acceptable.

6. I'll second that. A big shout out to Gainesville moms!
It seemed like just about every response was condemning the sign and the church. And this is from presumably suburban homemaker types in the deep south.

18. Any university worth their salt wouldn't...
like comments such as those. I attend a large state university in the western end of the Bible Belt--our president is a former Democratic senator. That comment wouldn't fly.

24. I would certainly say something...
If it feels heavy on your heart...I would hope that Tulane would have an open mind to your opinion. I am forever sick about these hateful opinions. I often wonder how many Muslims these people have actually met or broken bread with...it is true...ignorance breeds hatefulness.

26. What is really sad is "Allah" is Arabic for "God"
I have Palestinian Christian friends who have their Bibles written in Arabic. I know what "Allah" looks like in Arabic, and it was there in the verses that use the name "God" in English.

Jesus spoke Aramaic, and in that language, "God" is "Allaha". Something for these ministers to think about.

3. isn't it odd ... the sign condemning a religion (which the people putting up the sign are convinced
is full of terrorists) is unscathed, and the church is still standing, and the only assault on the church is some public outcry ...

and yet, should a Muslim place of worship put up a sign saying "Christianity is EVIL", you would probably see some vandalism or burnings, and some of the local police might not put a full effort into looking into it ...

to me, that's similar to the idea that the "right to life" party is all about the death penalty, bombing people to hell, guns, etc., while the "culture of death" (their words) are the ones protesting with no kills ...

elijah mohammed and others have said a lot worse in regards to christianity than "christianity is EVIL". i have yet to see all the terrorist attacks on him, or farrakhan for that matter, or any of their churches' properties.

29. The "War on Christmas" is harped on every year
You let one person object to a publicly funded nativity scene and you would think Christians were being rounded up and put into Glenn Beck's FEMA camps. Every year.

4. This is called projecting...
what they are saying about Islam, is actually what they themselves are. They can not admit it, but that is exactly what is happening.

And this is really ignorant of them too, considering that all three of the major monotheistic religions, stem from the same source.

What ever happened to "judge not unless ye be judged." So if some one puts up a sign that says Xtianity is evil, then they better not bitch.

16. no, this isn't the 'last stand of religion' it's the ongoing insanity of those who like to think
that GOD orders them to do this offensive shit!

Does that sick pastor want a F(***(G holy war on his congregation from a few of the most militant nuts who 'practice' Islam the way he 'practices' Christianity???? I don't want our country turning into India where both sides assault each other, and I've seen numerous reports over the years of many Christians dying from Islamic fundamentalists who say the Christians have no right to be in THEIR country.

Does that pastor not have a clue what the hell he's starting??? Oh, wait, maybe he's one of them that think he's supposed to take part in drawing Jesus out, like the pastor is some chosen one to start the end times... (oh they're out there, don't laugh!)

God help us - and good on those community leaders for speaking up NOW!

That congregation needs to revolt against its pastor and tell him to cut it out before violence starts up.

23. Put us a sign next to it
saying "Christianity if of the Stupid".

See if you don't get a riot. For every Jimmy Carter who makes Christianity look good, you get this kind of inverted asshole who ruins it.

Actually the sign that should go up would say:

Those who blow kill as a part of terrorism do not follow Islam.
Those who hate do not follow Christianity.

Osama Bin Laden isn't a Muslim. The irreverend Terry Jones is not a Christian. Both are posers.
