1. Mahalo!
Because I knew nothing about Bon dancing, I had to look it up. The origin is very interesting and the yearly custom is lovely.

For others who, like me, are unfamiliar with the Bon festival:

Bon Odori originates from the story of Mokuren, a disciple of the Buddha, who used his supernatural powers to look upon his deceased mother. He discovered she had fallen into the Realm of Hungry Ghosts and was suffering.<3> Greatly disturbed, he went to the Buddha and asked how he could release his mother from this realm. Buddha instructed him to make offerings to the many Buddhist monks who had just completed their summer retreat, on the fifteenth day of the seventh month. The disciple did this and, thus, saw his mother's release. He also began to see the true nature of her past unselfishness and the many sacrifices that she had made for him. The disciple, happy because of his mother's release and grateful for his mother's kindness, danced with joy. From this dance of joy comes Bon Odori or "Bon Dance", a time in which ancestors and their sacrifices are remembered and appreciated. See also: Ullambana Sutra.

8. Aloha gozaimasu!
:)
Thanks for that cool background info. I knew it was for the ancestor's spirits but NEVER heard that story, and I went to Japanese school when I was a small kid. Mahalo!

Here in New York ..my friends and I get together at Full Moon Drumming Circles singing Native American(Mohawk, Seneca) songs and dances and have a blast connecting to the Earth. Coming up, August 5th:bounce:

Thanks, mahina..I just talked to Border's Bookstore in Lihue, Kaua'i and had them send my son a gift certificate for his birthday..and told the guy I was going to retire and move back next year.B-)

7. Hey Cha!
My son and brother are on Kaua'i now, sailing back tomorrow. I'm worried of course because of the weather, and because the ocean is so unforgiving. I love them so much. Send me calm thoughts ok?

When you come home we'll have to hook up! Will you come to Oahu ever? Maybe Obon season next year? :) aloha dear

to you, mahina!

I'd love to hook up on Oahu..the whole Hawai'ian Islands are going to be my neck of the woods starting next year around October so it looks like I won't be there for Obon season in 2010 but hopefully to vote for the Democratic gov!

As it gets closer..my excitement will be off the charts!:bounce: I still don't know the best(most economical way)I'm going to get my stuff over there..but that will all unfold over the ensuing year.

Aloha nui loa, mahina~

PS~Sailing has to be one of the sweetest ways to connect to the elements.B-)

4. My husband is from Hawaii and we attended many Obon dances
across the island. My favorite was the one in Mililani. My mother is Okinawan and she is in Charlotte NC today for their Obon Celebration. Thanks for sharing this.

5. "We're fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance!"
Love the quote. Where does that come from?

www.dancingfools.org, the producers of the video in the OP, it's a Japanese proverb. :)
