As a black man who once lived in Boston, I do not find these stories to be shocking...at all.

However, I have never had any issues with the police (Boston taxi drivers, random Bostonian white people, but not the police) and personally believe that Sgt. Crowley was responding to Prof. Gates perceived elitism and not his race. Nevertheless, to know that there are police who abuse their power and antagonize people to the point that minorities become paranoid is shameful.

1. It's a touchy subject.

I read a piece once by an African-American journalist from Florida who was driving out of state. He accidentally cut off another motorist and the man yelled, "Hey, man go back to...Florida" but it didn't click right away because what he first thought he heard was "Go back to Africa".

Still, the fact is we've never really embraced the concept that all men are created equal.

Could it be that in Crowley's eyes that no matter how high up the elite ladder he travels, Gates will always be just another "Nggr". So if such is the case, how dare Gates think himself above Crowley?

Your entire argument is supposition. Crowley was in tears after not being able to revive a black man a few years ago, yet you condemn him as a racist. I think it's disgraceful. You are in no position to slander this man with idle speculation.

One other point about racial profiling. I'm sure that it exists, but I've been stopped twice by cops for no apparent reason, and I'm a clean-cut white guy. No one is immune.

7. obviously he didn't like what gates was saying to him

and he didn't like being challenged by gates. i am pretty sure it had to do with both race and class.
