Christiane Amanpour offered Kyra Phillips a history lesson when she questioned whether Helen Thomas could remain objective about President Obama after he surprised her with birthday cupcakes, a song, and a kiss Tuesday afternoon.

"How is she gonna cover the President objectively here, when he came out, sat next to her, gave her a smooch, cupcakes?" Phillips said.

"I'm gonna make a comment on what you said," Amanpour told Phillips. "I'm going to refer you all the way back to the Nixon administration when he came out in the press room and congratulated her on being named the first female dean of the White House press corps. And she had no problem continuing to be highly objective, and responded respectfully by asking him a very tough question on the ongoing Watergate affair. So I think Helen Thomas has definitely earned her stripes in the credibility department."

I love her reporting. She is always exact, thoughtful and understandable. One of the true remaining "professionals" in her field.

I'm glad she had some hard "evidence" to refute the comment made by Kyra Phillips. Helen doesn't deserve comments like that.

I admire her tremendously, she's a real reporter. Do you think Kyra actually understood she was being smacked? I'm convinced she's too stoopid to get it.

And I agree that Amanpour is the closest thing we have to another Cronkite.

You can hear it at the end when she throws in the whole "kiss on the cheek" come back. And Christiane's voice says it all at that point. I don't think they'll be exchanging Christmas cards real soon.

Small point, but good for Christiane Amanpour for calling her on the smart ass comment. I'm sure she missed the point totally.

She stumbled all over herself with "filler crap" in trying to cover her gaffe. She got smacked for her thoughtless comment and she knew it.

It was pretty obvious Kyra Phillips tried her smoothest transition away from that bit of humorous and entirely appropriate unpleasantness, all the while tossing mental expletives at her "colleague" (I hesitate to use that term even with quotation marks).

Good on Ms. Amanpour for her remark, and her continuing classy, top-grade journalism.

But it sounds to me like she was just joking when she made that remark about helen thomas covering the president objectively in the future. in the sense that the president is being awfully nice to me right now how could i possibly give him trouble.Like i said, it didnt sound to me like it was meant to be taking seriously and once again shes hot
