MSNBC Countdown w/ KEITH OLBERMANN - 6 August 2009: Keith shows video from town halls and interview with Jonathan Alter of Newsweek.

OLBERMANN: There's two elements here - this is the old 'I've got mine, so screw you. I'm already in the rowboat, you can swim' argument, but it's also the 'you're going to change my insurance ' thing. How do you answer the sort-of deep-seated emotion that's behind that, because clearly it's not based on fact.

ALTER: ...where she's wrong is that somehow if they've got it, it's going to be enough for them, or they're not going to be in danger of losing it, should they lose their job. A lot of people nowadays are losing their jobs, so what she's not factoring in is what happens to people who have some sort of a change that happens in their lives - they get sick, they actually need their health insurance. And it ends up being like homeowners insurance, where once you have a burglary suddenly they cancel your insurance. That's what health insurance is like and people who've not had big health challenges, as I have and others, don't understand, just because you're insured doesn't mean you're protected.

She's pretty confused, 'cause she looks like a Medicare recipient. I love these folks who say 'stop socialized medicine, but don't touch my Medicare.'

2. What there needs to be is billboards saying fear isn't an american value a peaceful democracy is....
Edited on Thu Aug-06-09 10:18 PM by GivePeaceAchance
It's all about the fear being the root of all evil, as once scared people can do ludicrous things. There needs to be messages to make people see they need to keep their fear in check because it's not American even to begin with and value a peaceful democracy that soldiers have sacrificed to keep. It says it all in the protester who says 'she's scared' and so were many others that went against their own humanity in history. Democracy would decide if Obama's health plan was anything they believed it to be, then the pendulum would swing the other way voting wise, but it won't be what they believe it to be.

The moment a person is being made to feel scared turn it off, tune it out, as it's a trigger for turning off our humanity.

11. Wrong again

Alters statement about a public/private co-op of some kind being a good 'compromise' and us liberals shouldn't say public option or bust is absolutely and completely wrong. What many and I would hope most liberals really want is 'universal single payer health care'. We have come to see that at this time that does not seem to be an option. So the fall back position or compromise we have accepted reluctantly is a 'public insurance' option. This is typical of Conservatives they want you to compromise and when you state your compromise position they then call on you to compromise again while they never change their position. How come the media always seems to treat Conservatives holding strong positions as good because they have 'strong convictions' but Liberals can't have strong positions because we are supposed to be the 'reasonable' ones?
