3. KKK??? Is he serious?
That is a completely heinous comparison.

These "mobs" are doing what we all did when we objected to Bush and his tyranny.

I am not sure what is happening of late, but the past 9 years have seen an assault on the 1st amendment, and we would be good to take notice.

4. He wasn't comparing
He was asked if he'd seen anything like what we're seeing now and he gave an honest response.

5. That is indeed the definition of what it is to compare!
It was a heinous comparison. KKK eh? Where was the lynching at the town halls? Torches of fire? Hangings? This is nothing but a gross exaggeration on Dingell's part, and he should be ashamed.

What he was doing was a veiled attempt at demonizing free speech and bullying those who wish to speak out. After Bush's 8 years of doing so, I am completely sick of it! This is the US. We have a 1st Amendment!

6. Why put "mobs" in quotes?
They are mobs. Have you been listening to what they are saying? No way you can compare this to anti-Bush protests.

The KKK comparison is apt because these are the same people, the very same people. The George Wallace people, or at least their children, acting in exactly the same way. Maybe you haven't seen them before, but I recognize them.

7. I am denouncing...

the silencing of people. If what they say does not call for or incite violence, I affirm the right to say it. I don't have to agree with the position, but I will back another's ability to speak.

I am sick of people - even members of our press like Amy Goodman! - being silenced by police. I am sick of media demonizing types of speech as "racist", "in congruence with KKK members' views", etc, because the views are different (yet have nothing to do with race, incidentally).

Fundamentalist Christians believe all sorts of things that agnostics do not, and vice versa. Both should have the right to protest, disagree with the powers, etc.

This is not the Soviet Union.

12. Here's Lester Maddox

Replace "Johnson" with "Obama" and "Wallace" with "Palin" and he could be any teabagger. These are the same people. If you just looked at Maddox's sign here, you might have no idea that he was one of the leading racists of his era. There's no need to silence them, but when they do things such as calling any policy with which they disagree "socialism," we should have the historical sense to realize where and when we have heard that before.

I don't know where you are from, but I recognize these people. These are the same folks, and their playbook has not changed.

8. To put it plainly:
Edited on Tue Aug-11-09 12:49 PM by lyonspotter
We don't define racism as: "I disagree with Obama."

9. What about "I'm scared of Obama"?
"I want my country back!"
From whom? The rightfully elected president? (The 1st in 8 years, mind you)

Just because you are incapable of recognizing racism, doesn't mean it isn't there.

Don't give me some BS that we are trying to stop these mobs from speaking out. They can come and ASK their questions like everybody else.... or at least like everybody else might be able to if these rubes weren't yelling.

11. People shouted "We want our country back" when...

BushCo were in office, elected or not.

Yet that statement then, like now, has absolutely nothing to do with race.

Disagreement with Obama is not racism. Deep disagreement with Bush is not racism, per se, either. I was amongst that fold that had great disdain for the Bush regime's ideas. You can see a great many videos I made in protest against them here: http://www.youtube.com/user/LYONSPOTTER

I don't think those qualify me as a racist.
