"President Obama may drop the "public option" of his healthcare plan, Chip Reid reports. Maggie Rodriguez spoke with former Presidential candidate Howard Dean about a "public option"... "

Howard Dean predicts that there will be a public option by December. He says if you don't have it then just reform insurance and try later.

I say we may not have a majority later if we keep giving in.

He was also on Morning Joe today. Here is the video.

Dean on Morning Joe on health care reform

I did not realize that Joe and Mika were sympathetic to this reform.

From the link:

"The president knows very well that you aren't really going to have health care reform without a public option. But he also knows he has to get this out of the Senate," Dean said on "Morning Joe." "He's got a very important member of the Finance Committee, Kent Conrad, who doesn't want to vote for this bill if it's got a public option in it. And he knows he's not going to get any Republican votes, of any kind. So at the end of this day, this bill is going to be written by Democrats. It's got to get out of the Senate. And you only need a few Democrats to take out take out the public option."

He added that with Republicans unlikely to support any version of health care legislation, he had no doubt that the final reform bill would be passed with the help of reconciliation, which means Democrats need only to muster 50 votes in the Senate rather than the usual 60.

Dean told RCP earlier this year that a health care reform bill without a strong public option was pointless. "If it doesn't, all we have is the same old stuff, and I don't think it's worth spending $634 billion on what we've already got," he said.

The Morning Joe interview is really quite good.

1. The Republicans now are saying a co-op is the same thing and they want to kill it too

You cannot give them any slack, they reel it in and pull you further to a punch in the face.

Here's an example:

'The so-called “co-ops” they are talking about are going to be funded by the government! This 1100 page bill was written by lawyers who are in support of this President’s public option healthcare plan! The bill is worded in a way that only lawyers can understand the meaning of! If you read between the lines—there still is the government control this President wants, and this will still be a government-run program! .... We must keep up the fight against all these bills! The healthcare bill must be defeated!'

They don't care about the details or this part or that part. They are whittling it down more and more until all the vital organs are removed. What is the point of health care reform if you take out the organs it needs to function?

With a 60 majority in the Senate and bigger majority in the House, this President is signaling to America that there isn't support for the bill?! I think they need to run MORE ads against the blue dogs and let everyone in their states know - if you vote a Democrat into office and they act like a Republican, you may as well vote a Republican in. At least you'll know what you are going to get - better that than someone like Lieberman who runs against your own President and party as he did with McCain.

3. Exactly, which is why they may as well have pushed for Single Payer.
President Obama would be getting exactly the same reaction from the right wing media and birthers/deathers/townhalle rs/teabaggers had he proposed single payer.

He proposed a modest public option and universal coverage, and they called him communist, socialist, fascist, Nazi and Hitler, with people screaming and bringing guns to townhalls. If a watered down Public Option/no Public Option passes along with no ability to negotiate prescription drug costs, the plan WILL fail.

And when it does, the right wing media (with the help of the MSM) will play pin the tail on the donkey. Instead of correctly pointing out that the failure was a lack of progressive legislation and a cave-in to lobbyists, blue dogs and Republicans, they'll blame Obama and all Dems and pretend that what was passed was basically equivalent to Single Payer.

It'll continue to be referred to as 'ObamaCare' regardless of how moderate/center-right and toothless it is. If that happens it would kill real, substantive reform for decades. And it would damage the Democratic Party significantly.

4. Damn...what about this video requires unrecommends? It's like a toy
to some people.

There is just not that much controversy about this video posting.

5. He was also on "Morning Meeting" with Moron Rattigan on MSNBC
He's much more upbeat about stuff than I am. He's so supportive of Obama and yet he's totally ignored.

9. Dean is right. The public option will only need 50 votes to pass via reconciliation.
It was a relief to hear him discuss the thoughtful, common sense strategy that is taking place behind the scenes. The interview is a must see!
